About Chelba Cooperative
Chelba is a specialty green coffee producer cooperative located in the Gedeo region of Yirgacheffe. The Gedeo region has approximately 700 smallholder farmers who deliver their harvested coffee cherries to Chelba Cooperative's processing plant for centralized processing. These small growers have an average cultivation area of 2 hectares. The total coffee cultivation area in the region is approximately 888 hectares. The growing altitude ranges from 1900 to 2100 meters above sea level. The local climate features suitable temperatures, with daytime temperatures around 25°C and nighttime temperatures around 18°C. They plant coffee trees alongside subsistence crops and livestock-raising areas. The main local shade tree species include acacia, podocarpus, and others.
Quality Processing Methods
Chelba Cooperative's processing plant primarily handles coffee cherries harvested from surrounding farmers. Before processing the coffee cherries, Chelba requires farmers to harvest according to strict standards, picking only mature red cherries. This is a crucial quality control step for specialty coffee. In recent years, Chelba Cooperative's beans have received high praise. Green beans processed using the Natural method exhibit strawberry sweetness and blueberry notes, while green beans processed through the Washed method display sweetness and acidity similar to citrus and apple.
