FrontStreet Coffee Introduces Cristo Rey Estate from Guatemala's Huehuetenango Region
Cristo Rey Estate, located in the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala, covers approximately 59 hectares, of which 13 hectares are natural forest, with the remaining area dedicated to coffee cultivation. Benjamin (Mincho) Herberto Villatoro and his wife Zoila A. Gomez began transforming this land into a coffee estate in the early 1980s. Mincho, who believes coffee runs through his veins, was determined to produce high-quality coffee here, aiming to make a name for himself with clean and interesting flavor profiles.
In the 1990s, the efforts of Mincho and his wife began to bear fruit when European coffee company Iily started a long-term partnership with Cristo Rey Estate. However, Mincho remained unsatisfied and continued improving coffee quality. In 2009, his coffee achieved second place in the coffee bidding competition organized by Guatemala's official coffee institution ANACAFE. Since then, Cristo Rey Estate's premium coffee has frequently appeared in the specialty coffee lists of both ANACAFE and Cup of Excellence (C.O.E.).
Mincho passed away in September 2012, and Cristo Rey Estate was passed to his son Jorge Herberto Villatoro Gomez. He inherited Mincho's spirit and techniques, and under Jorge's management, Cristo Rey Estate's coffee made it into the Guatemala C.O.E. rankings in both 2014 and 2016. The estate will continue to produce high-quality coffee that represents the distinctive flavors of Huehuetenango in the future.
