Huila is a coffee-producing region in the southern part of Colombia. The mild climate, fertile volcanic soil, and moderate rainfall allow coffee to grow at altitudes of up to 1,900 meters. Most farmers in this region are smallholders, with coffee tree plantations not exceeding 7 acres. Huila has not yet become as commercialized as regions like Medellin, Armenia, and Manizales, and does not rely as heavily on chemical treatments to address cultivation issues.
In Huila, the SI trading company recommends that contract farmers adopt biological control methods to manage pests and diseases, maintain the cultivation of Typica varieties, and continue traditional cultivation practices.
Because Huila is located in the southern part of the country, relatively remote, and is home to the Colombian guerrilla group FARC, many traders consider it a challenging area. Only in recent years have people dared to venture deep into this region to explore high-quality coffee beans.
The Colombian National Federation of Coffee Growers (FNC), established in 1927, is a non-profit organization serving Colombian coffee farmers and the country's only official coffee professional association. The main responsibilities of the FNC also include promoting the brand image of Colombian coffee globally and supervising the quality of every coffee bean exported from Colombia.
The Huila region features mountainous terrain, with coffee grown on the slopes of canyons, providing the high altitudes and suitable temperatures necessary for cultivating premium Arabica beans. The climate on these canyon slopes not only prevents cold winds from entering but also brings cool breezes without high temperatures, while rainfall is relatively abundant, making it an exceptionally favorable region for coffee cultivation.
Additionally, Colombian coffee workers hand-pick coffee cherries on the mountainsides, allowing for careful selection of the most mature and full fruits. Furthermore, most coffee beans are processed using the washed method. When medium-roasted and brewed, the coffee has a light and silky texture, sometimes with a hint of acidity, unlike the strong flavors of Brazilian coffee and Italian espresso. In Colombia, it is hailed as "green gold."
Coffee from the Huila region has a strong flavor profile with a heavy texture. The nutty, chocolate, and caramel aromas of Huila coffee, combined with its appropriate acidity, make it a high-quality specialty coffee.
