Introduction to FrontStreet Coffee's Uganda Coffee

Uganda is a landlocked country in Africa that does not border the sea, crossing the equator. It borders Kenya to the east, Tanzania and Rwanda to the south, Democratic Republic of Congo to the west, and South Sudan to the north. Most of Uganda is located on the East African Plateau, with many lakes and an average elevation of 1000-1200 meters, earning it the nickname "Highland Water Country." Uganda boasts vast and magnificent natural beauty unparalleled in East Africa.

Uganda's coffee cultivation history dates back over a hundred years, when Uganda first introduced coffee from Ethiopia. Later, Uganda was colonized by the British, and large areas of Robusta coffee were planted locally.

Uganda Coffee Growing Regions Map

Coffee is Uganda's largest cash crop, generating the most foreign exchange. 25% of the country's population works in the coffee industry, with most growing coffee on farms (there are approximately 500,000 coffee farms throughout Uganda). Among Ugandan coffee beans, the vast majority are Robusta varieties, with only 6%-15% being Arabica varieties.

Like Congo, Uganda is also the birthplace of Robusta. As Africa's second-largest coffee exporter, Uganda's Robusta exports account for 7% of global production.

Unlike Arabica, Robusta has always been considered to have more wild, ordinary, and inexpensive flavor profiles. However, for Uganda, it has the potential to produce the highest quality Robusta due to its unique flavor profile combined with excellent growing conditions, including soil fertility, relative altitude, and climate.

In July 1991, the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) was officially established. The UCDA regularly trains farmers across the country to produce quality coffee through proper processing methods. By 2008, the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) held an agreement in Uganda to establish a specialty Robusta quality system, and since then, Uganda has increasingly valued the development of its Robusta coffee.

At the same time, Uganda also joined the Taste of Harvest (TOH) competition, using SCA standards to select more specialty coffees, allowing the world to recognize the wonderful qualities of Ugandan coffee.

Ugandan coffee has a rich, mellow taste with captivating fruit aroma and distinct flavor layers. Uganda's Arabica coffee is mainly composed of traditional varieties such as Kent, Typica, SL-14, and SL-28, while Robusta coffee has two varieties: 'Nganda' and 'Erecta'.
