Locally, coffee beans widely cultivated in Sumatra and other small Indonesian islands are almost all called Mandheling. They are distinguished by different names based on region and green bean suppliers to differentiate Mandheling from various areas.

Lintong Mandheling

Mandheling coffee beans are relatively large with hard bean texture, making them prone to defects during cultivation. After harvesting, they typically undergo strict manual selection. If the quality control process is not rigorous enough, it can easily result in inconsistent quality. Additionally, different roasting levels directly affect the taste profile, making it a controversial single-origin variety. Although Lintong Mandheling G1 is Grade-1, it still retains the characteristic high defect rate of Indonesian beans, with approximately 8% defective beans.

Golden Mandheling

Golden Mandheling is a variety registered by PWN company. PWN company has trademarked Golden Mandheling, meaning that only Golden Mandheling produced by PWN company can be considered authentic "Golden Mandheling" in the future.

PWN company's full name is Pwani Coffee Company, which is a very famous coffee acquisition company locally in Indonesia. They mainly purchase Mandheling coffee, acquiring beans from almost all the best-producing regions in Indonesia. Therefore, most beans from PWN company are unique specialty coffees. Golden Mandheling is one of their products - after acquiring the green beans, they undergo multiple rounds of manual selection to choose plump, defect-free beans. Only these premium beans, which seem to have undergone layer-by-layer selection like an audition process, can be classified as Golden Mandheling.

In Aceh, coffee ranks as the second most important export economic crop. It is estimated that there are approximately 60,000 small-scale coffee farmers in the region, each owning about 1-2 hectares of coffee cultivation land. Traditional Indonesian coffee trade follows a multi-point supply chain model, starting from farmers and passing through multiple intermediaries before gradually accumulating into large export shipments. Within Indonesia's coffee trading system, direct trade with a single window that collects from farmers and arranges export is quite rare locally.

Mandheling Tiger

Mandheling Tiger requires a flavor profile with traditional Chinese medicinal herbal aromas, and only Mandheling beans with a screen size above 17 and defect rate below 4% can be called "Tiger."

The varieties of Indonesian Tiger Mandheling mainly include Catuai, Typica, and Sidikalong. Only Mandheling with a screen size above 17 and defect rate below 4% can be called "Tiger."

Tiger Mandheling offers a relatively balanced flavor profile with high clarity, featuring distinct cream, dark chocolate, and nutty notes.
