Understanding Coffee Beans and Peaberry
Coffee beans are the fruit of the coffee tree. Generally, a single fruit (coffee cherry) contains two coffee beans, known as Type I. However, due to various factors, some fruits develop with only a single bean during maturation. This oval-shaped single coffee bean is called peaberry, or Type II. Compared to Type II, Type I is sometimes colloquially called "female bean," but in fact, both are just different growth forms of coffee beans, not gender differences, and the Chinese terminology can be misleading.
Peaberry Coffee Production
Peaberry coffee needs to be manually selected one by one from mixed coffee beans. Coffee sold in the market is typically a mixture of peaberry and flat beans. Initially, Indonesians discovered that coffee beans had different flavors due to their different shapes, so they began to separate peaberry from flat beans. Peaberry production accounts for about 3%-10% of total yield, generally around 5%.
Characteristics of PB (Peaberry)
PB (Peaberry) is quite special. Round beans (PB) typically grow on the ends of coffee trees that flower too early or late. Due to scarce production, accounting for only 10% of the yield, peaberries from the same coffee tree are often priced higher than other flat beans. When peaberries are specially collected together, defective beans are usually removed, reducing the defect ratio and making the particles more consistent, resulting in more even roasting and improved taste.
