FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Blue Mountain Coffee
Blue Mountain Coffee is one of the varieties frequently seen in coffee shops, but many domestic coffee shops label it as "Blue Mountain flavor." In fact, such coffee beans only taste like Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee but are not the genuine article.
Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is mainly produced in the Blue Mountain Range in the eastern part of Jamaica Island. The mountain is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. On clear days, when sunlight shines directly on the azure sea surface, the peaks reflect the brilliant blue light of the seawater, hence its name.
The highest peak of Blue Mountain reaches an altitude of 2,256 meters, making it the highest peak in the Caribbean region and a famous tourist destination. Located in the coffee belt, it features fertile volcanic soil, fresh air without pollution, and a humid climate with year-round fog and rain (average precipitation of 1,980 mm and temperature around 27°C). Such climate conditions have created the world-renowned Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee and also the world's highest-priced coffee. This coffee possesses all the characteristics of fine coffee - not only is it rich and mellow in taste, but due to the perfect combination of sweetness, acidity, and bitterness, it has no bitterness at all, with only moderate and perfect acidity. It is generally consumed as a single-origin coffee.
The annual harvest period for Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is from June to November. Generally, hand-picking is used. After picking, the coffee beans undergo washing, pulping, fermentation, dehydration, drying, hulling, and roasting processes to obtain Blue Mountain coffee beans. During the green bean processing, each step has dedicated personnel responsible for quality supervision. For the precious Blue Mountain Coffee, the packaging and transportation methods adopted by the Jamaican government are also unique. Unlike other coffees packaged and transported in 60kg/bag cloth bags, Blue Mountain Coffee is packaged and transported in wooden barrels with a standard of 70kg/barrel. Jamaica is also the last country that still uses traditional wooden barrels for packaging and transporting coffee.
Since Japan has consistently invested in Jamaica's coffee industry, most of today's Blue Mountain Coffee is controlled by Japanese people, who have also obtained priority purchasing rights for Blue Mountain Coffee. In 1992, Jamaica sold 688 tons of Blue Mountain Coffee to Japan, 75 tons to the United States, and 59 tons to the United Kingdom. Now, 90% of Blue Mountain Coffee is purchased by Japanese people. Since other parts of the world can only obtain 10% of Blue Mountain Coffee, regardless of price, Blue Mountain Coffee is always in short supply.
FrontStreet Coffee's Blue Mountain is No. 1 Blue Mountain from Clifton Estate, priced at 60 yuan per cup.
