FrontStreet Coffee Introduction: Guatemala Coffee Growing Regions

Guatemala is divided into eight distinct coffee growing regions: Antigua Classic, Huehuetenango, Rainforest Coban, Traditional Atitlan, Fraijanes Plateau, Volcanic San Marcos, Acatenango, and New Oriente.

ANACAFE

The National Coffee Association of Guatemala (Asociación Nacional del Café, abbreviated as Anacafé) was established in 1960 and represents all coffee producers in Guatemala. Founded by pioneers of the International Coffee Organization, Anacafé continues the centralized coffee production statistical work that began with the Central Coffee Office (La Oficina Central del Café), established by the Guatemalan central government in 1928.

The Guatemalan Coffee Association has also established a coffee laboratory known as Analab, promotes the children's coffee awareness program (funcafé), and publishes "El Cafetal" magazine. The association represents Guatemala at International Coffee Organization meetings and receives funding solely from fees related to coffee exports.

Cultivation History

Located in Central America, Guatemala boasts a uniquely advantageous geographical environment, connected to North America to the north and South America to the south. Facing the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, the climate is relatively humid and tropical, making it consistently one of the world's important coffee producing regions.
