Guatemala is a major coffee-producing country in Central America, ranking eighth in the world in production. The name Guatemala comes from the Mayan language, meaning "land of many trees." Located in Central America, it is known as "the pearl on the crown of Central America." Although Guatemala has limited land area, it possesses a rich and diverse climate. Known for its lakes and volcanoes, the country has volcanic soil, precipitation, temperature, humidity, and altitude that provide the perfect natural environment for coffee cultivation.
Guatemala is renowned for producing coffee beans with rich fruity aromas and was ranked as the largest coffee producer in Central America for most of the 20th and 21st centuries. Among its regions, Antigua is a famous coffee-producing area, characterized by its rich volcanic soil, low humidity, and strong sunlight. Three active volcanoes—Agua, Acatenango, and Fuego—form a beautiful valley landscape.
Approximately every 30 years, the area around Antigua suffers from volcanic eruptions, which provide more nitrogen to the already fertile land. Abundant rainfall and sunshine make this place even more suitable for coffee cultivation. Antigua's coffee is produced at the Carmona estate, where the best quality coffee is El Puca, which not only has excellent quality but can also be considered quite complete when compared with other Latin American coffees. Guatemalan Antigua coffee is also known for its rich and full-bodied taste and unique charcoal-roasted aroma.
