Customers often visit FrontStreet Coffee and ask us, "What is Janson Estate? Why have I never heard of it?"

Regarding Janson Estate, it's actually a very prestigious estate in Panama! It's just because it previously never entered the Chinese market and only focused on European and American markets, which is why it's not well-known.

The Rise of Geisha Coffee

In 2004, the Peterson family of Panama first introduced the Geisha variety to the world, and since then, the international coffee community has gone crazy for Geisha, calling it the "champagne of the coffee world." In 2013, when the Panama Specialty Coffee Association awarded the Panama Coffee Awards, there was a new contender—Karl Janson's Janson Estate Geisha.

Janson Estate History

80 years ago, Panama's Janson Estate was founded by Swiss national Karl Janson and his wife Margaret, and it remains family-operated by the Janson family to this day. The estate is located within the Barú Volcano production region of Chiriquí Province, with an altitude reaching 1,500 meters. The excellent natural environment, abundant rainfall brought by ocean currents, and fertile volcanic soil have made this place an Eden for cultivating specialty coffee. Besides growing Geisha, Janson Estate also produces excellent quality Caturra, Catuaí, and Pacamara varieties.

Sustainable Processing Methods

The estate places great emphasis on environmental protection and sustainable development. The washed processing uses natural, pure mountain spring water, while the natural processing is equally meticulous. Ripe coffee cherries are placed on clean grounds or drying beds for natural fermentation depending on different batches.

Barú Volcano and Volcanic Soil

Barú Volcano, also known as Chiriquí Volcano, is located in the southeastern extension of the Talamanca mountain range, with an altitude of 3,477 meters, making it the highest peak in Panama.

This volcano is dormant, with the last major eruption occurring around 500 AD. Additionally, there is some evidence suggesting a small volcanic eruption occurred around 1550.

Volcanic soil is a general term for soil formed from volcanic eruption materials, including volcanic ash, lava, and basalt. Volcanic soil is typically porous with good water permeability. The volcanic lava weathers easily, and combined with the fine particles of volcanic ash that are easily decomposed by microorganisms, it makes nutrients more available to plants compared to other rocky mountain soils.

Coffee Flavor Characteristics

Generally, coffee grown in volcanic soil has more balanced flavors, and higher altitudes also contribute to richer complexity. Research suggests this might be because volcanic rocks contain high concentrations of sulfur and sulfides, which are essential elements for synthesizing certain aromatic compounds. Additionally, the potassium in volcanic soil increases the body of the coffee.

However, interestingly, coffee grown in non-volcanic soil, with less sulfur and potassium, may have less balanced overall flavors but instead develops more distinctive and unique characteristics.

Janson Natural Geisha Profile

Janson's Natural Geisha features uplifting, bright yellow tropical fruit acidity. At medium temperatures, it presents gentle and sweet characteristics of peach, papaya, and honey. As it cools, it reveals intense bergamot aroma and Darjeeling Earl Grey tea notes. For such performance, when other Panama Geishas often cost over a thousand yuan per kilogram of green beans, Janson can be considered incredibly "industry-conscientious."
