What is Single Origin Coffee? What Types Does Starbucks' Single Origin Series Include?
What are Single Origin Series Coffee Beans?
Coffee beans carry many unique characteristics from their origins, derived from factors such as climate, rainfall, soil, and altitude. The flavor profiles of coffee beans vary greatly depending on the variety, country, and even specific growing region. However, due to various limitations, it can be difficult to trace the true origin of some coffee beans, which led to the emergence of single variety, single origin specialty coffees.
Perhaps many partners have noticed that since the launch of our single origin Yunnan coffee beans in late 2017, Starbucks has introduced the "Single Origin Series Coffee Beans" category in their coffee bean lineup.
First, let's look at the name "Single Origin Series"—as the name suggests, it features coffee beans from a single growing region. We often say: "geography is flavor," and the vision of the Single Origin Series is to deepen the concept of how geography influences flavor.
Perhaps some partners might ask, "We already have the Reserve series, why add another Single Origin Series?" While Reserve is excellent, the rarity of Reserve coffee beans means they cannot be available in all stores due to their limited availability. (Some Single Origin Series coffee beans)
For example, consider this scenario:
There's a Starbucks downstairs from me, but the nearest Reserve store is several miles away. What if I want to drink special beans? This is where the significance of Single Origin Series coffee beans becomes apparent. To better illustrate the concept of geography influencing flavor, all Single Origin Series coffees are carefully selected, high-quality coffee beans.
So far, Starbucks has launched coffee beans from regions such as Rwanda, Guatemala, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea, which are among the world's major coffee-producing regions.
For coffee, its growing environment requirements are primarily within the tropics, with relatively cool climates and frost-free winters; moderate rainfall; well-draining soil, with volcanic ash soil being most suitable; and altitudes between 200-2000m. In terms of altitude, higher altitude generally produces better coffee quality, with premium coffees mostly coming from highlands or mountainous regions. Some Central American growing regions even use altitude to grade coffee quality.
It can be said that coffee beans from a particular origin represent the best quality of that region and can convey the unique flavors imparted by that region to the coffee.
However, finally, FrontStreet Coffee would like to remind everyone that single origin only represents the source of coffee beans and does not inherently rate or grade their quality. Therefore, single origin coffee has unique significance and flavors with distinct geographical characteristics, but this does not necessarily mean it is high-quality or guaranteed to be delicious. The best-tasting coffee is not always single origin coffee, and single origin coffee may not necessarily suit your taste preferences.
