FrontStreet Coffee's Colombian Pink Bourbon was first discovered by coffee farmer Rodrigo Sanchez in the Vera region of Colombia. As its name suggests, Pink Bourbon fruits turn pink when mature, making it a hybrid variety of Red Bourbon and Yellow Bourbon. Pink Bourbon is an extremely rare variety, far scarcer than Pacamara and Geisha.

The Origins of Bourbon Coffee

Bourbon coffee was initially cultivated on Réunion Island, which was known as Bourbon Island (?le Bourbon) before 1789. In simple terms, Bourbon is a coffee variety belonging to the Arabica species branch. It typically produces red fruits, called Red Bourbon, but also includes Yellow Bourbon and Orange Bourbon (along with Catuai, Catimor, etc.). Yellow Bourbon has relatively lower yields but superior quality.

Unique Characteristics of Pink Bourbon

Pink Bourbon coffee trees possess different characteristics and represent an extremely rare new variety. According to its developers, Pink Bourbon was hybridized and cultivated from Red Bourbon and Yellow Bourbon.

As its name implies, Pink Bourbon's coffee cherries mature to a romantic pink color. However, maintaining this romance is incredibly difficult. Sometimes we harvest orange Bourbons because the final color of coffee fruits is determined by recessive genes within the pollen grains. Among the selected pollen grains for hybridization, there are both yellow genes leaning toward Yellow Bourbon and red genes leaning toward Red Bourbon. Both are recessive genes that easily interfere with each other. With new variety hybridization technology still immature, we struggle to control its stability. At this stage, whether we can produce our beloved pink coffee cherries depends more on good fortune.

Cultivation Challenges

The process of cultivating Pink Bourbon is not easy. Throughout the entire growth period of the coffee tree, meticulous care is required, with high demands on the growing environment. A relatively closed, independent environment is most ideal, as such conditions better preserve and consolidate this variety's unique color and characteristics. However, the red and yellow gene groups are difficult to separate. If these two highly individualistic gene groups could be controlled, the color instability problem might be solved, though such requirements are difficult to meet.

Geographic Distribution and Farming

Pink Bourbon can be found in Colombia and Guatemala. Although extremely rare, it demonstrates strong resistance to leaf rust disease, produces good yields, and requires minimal fertilizer use. The FrontStreet Coffee Pink Bourbon sold in our Taobao store originates from the Keltierras Farm in the Jutiapa region of Guatemala. The farm is located in the southeastern part of the country, 124 kilometers from the capital Guatemala City, with the farm owner establishing this plantation at an altitude of 1500 meters.

Genetic Characteristics and Harvesting Challenges

Among the genes affecting coffee fruit color, red and yellow are dominant genes, while pink and orange are recessive genes. Consequently, Pink Bourbon quantities are extremely scarce, and even when they appear, maintaining stability is extremely difficult. Additionally, Pink Bourbon faces challenges in determining ripeness during harvesting.

Flavor Profile

Pink Bourbon is not just rare—it also has excellent flavor. This [FrontStreet Coffee Colombian Vera San Adolfo Pink Bourbon] exhibits wonderful fruity flavors after light roasting: green grape juice, berry notes, floral aromas, sweetness, and smoothness.
