Actually, as early as before 2004, Panama coffee was always on the fringes of specialty coffee, not receiving attention from the international coffee community. However, in 2004, the Geisha variety became famous overnight in the specialty coffee world, repeatedly winning championships in Panama's national treasure bean cupping competitions, dominating all the way until 2007. But did you know? After expert identification, the Geisha variety actually originates from Ethiopia and is a direct descendant of Typica!

FrontStreet Coffee's Panama Coffee Flavor - Medium Body with Unique Aroma

Although geographically neighboring countries like Costa Rica and Colombia, Panama coffee has a very unique, balanced, and rich aroma, with a light yet sweet and gentle acidity, moderate body, making it a high-quality specialty coffee producing region! Among them, Geisha coffee has received worldwide attention. In terms of flavor, experts' descriptions include intense citrus aroma, jasmine fragrance, almond and mango, honey-like sweetness, and bright, complex fruit acidity!

FrontStreet Coffee's Panama Coffee - Does Geisha Originate from Ethiopia?

The Geisha variety mainly originates from the Kaffa Forest, known as the coffee gene treasury, specifically from Gesha Mountain in southwestern Ethiopia, near the Sudan border, with altitudes ranging from 1700 to 2100 meters. But what's puzzling is why Ethiopia didn't keep such high-quality coffee for itself but instead gave it to Panama?

In Ethiopia's official archives, there are actually descriptions of Geisha. At that time, Geisha was discovered to have extremely strong disease resistance and could be used to "hybridize" with other coffee trees to enhance their disease resistance. However, its flavor was not described in detail, and its yield was poor, so it completely disappeared from public knowledge for a long time until recently being rediscovered by the world. This has led some to speculate whether the transformation in Geisha's flavor was caused by Panama's terroir, significantly enhancing its characteristics? However, this remains to be confirmed.

Panama Specialty Coffee Regions and Varieties

Panama's specialty coffee producing areas are concentrated in the Chiriquí Province in the western part of the country. The Boquete region, located in Chiriquí Province, is Panama's oldest and most famous coffee producing area, with estates like Jaramillo and Hacienda La Esmeralda also located here. This place not only has volcanic fertile soil but is also shrouded in mist, keeping temperatures from getting too high while providing abundant annual rainfall - the favorite growing environment for Arabica coffee trees. No wonder the coffee quality is so exceptional!

Besides Geisha, Panama's coffee varieties are very diverse, including ancient Typica and Bourbon, as well as newer varieties like Caturra and Catuaí. Among them, the Typica variety has distinct acidity and delicate aromas.
