There are truly many names for Mandheling coffee on the market: Lintong Mandheling, Golden Mandheling, Top Golden Mandheling, Tiger Mandheling, Mafen Mandheling, Emerald Mandheling. In fact, Mandheling is not a region name, place name, port name, nor a coffee variety name. Its name is actually a phonetic error of the Indonesian Mandheling ethnic group.

FrontStreet Coffee's Mandheling is divided into various regional types such as FrontStreet Coffee Lintong Mandheling and FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling. What exactly are the differences between these Mandhelings? Locals widely plant coffee beans on Sumatra and other Indonesian small islands, almost all called Mandheling. Depending on the region and green bean supplier, these names are used to distinguish Mandhelings from different regions.

FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling is actually produced from Mandheling purchased locally in Indonesia by a company called Pwani Coffee Company, which then registered the name Golden Mandheling. Therefore, the Mandheling produced by this company is the authentic FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling.

FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling has obvious differences from regular Mandheling. FrontStreet Coffee Golden Mandheling green beans are hand-sorted 3-4 times, with larger beans that are dark green and appear as neat flat beans. In terms of flavor, the Golden Mandheling is rich and full-bodied with honey and cream aromas, making it unique and irreplaceable in the coffee market.

Wet hulling, also known as Wet Hulling or Giling Basah in the local language, is a traditional Indonesian coffee processing method. Judging from the name alone, wet hulling seems very similar to wet processing (washed processing), however, the cupping flavors of these two processing methods are completely different. Coffee processed by wet hulling is typically rich and intense with a very distinct personality. The extremely fast processing speed of wet hulling also results in higher defect rates in Mandheling. The processing plant arranges employees to conduct manual defect sorting, generally including DP (double-picked) and TP (triple-picked). Mandheling that has undergone triple-picking will have a lower defect rate than double-picked.

Aside from those subtle differences, we generally believe that wet-hulled beans have earthy, smoky, and chocolate flavors, with what is called "low acidity," rich yet appearing rather dull.
