There are many factors that determine whether a cup of coffee tastes good. SOE simply refers to espresso made from single-origin coffee beans, and the coffee beans used are not necessarily better than those used in blended coffee.
Single-origin coffee beans refer to coffee beans from a single producing region. For example, if a bag of beans all comes from the same AA region within a province, as long as they are grown on roads within the same region, they are single-origin coffee beans. However, if a bag of beans comes from the same province but contains beans from both AA region and BB region, then it is a blended coffee bean.
However, coffee beans grown in the same region are not necessarily good for espresso extraction. The reason why espresso is loved and demanded by so many people is that it can have extremely high stability, maintaining a balanced, rich, and full-bodied coffee flavor for a long time.
As an agricultural product, coffee is affected by changes in origin climate and terroir each year, and its quality and flavor will have certain differences. At the same time, espresso is a coffee liquid extracted under high pressure and high temperature with extremely high concentration. As long as there is a slight deficiency in coffee quality, or if it is not reasonably interpreted during the roasting process, espresso can easily produce unpleasant tastes and experiences.
SOE represents Single Origin Espresso. Although it is not necessarily equivalent to specialty coffee, if you select single-origin coffee beans with easily identifiable flavors as SOE, you can create espresso with unique and typical flavors.
For example, the typical citrus flavor of Yirgacheffe, Kenya with fruit flavors, etc. Plus, espresso amplifies the taste of coffee, so specific flavors are more prominent compared to pour-over, but it also amplifies the acidity.
In FrontStreet Coffee's past experimental comparisons, it was found that espresso extracted from lightly roasted coffee beans has higher acidity and can easily develop sharp sour tastes. When diluted with water to make Americano or mixed with milk to make latte, the overall taste lacks richness and appears thin and watery.
However, although SOE has outstanding performance, because it comes from a single origin, its shortcomings are also relatively easy to magnify. Therefore, factors such as roasting and particle coarseness will affect the flavor, so it is not necessarily better to drink than blended coffee.
Therefore, coffee bean quality, freshness, roasting, coffee machine, production process, personal taste preferences, etc., will all greatly affect the performance quality of coffee. So when it comes to what kind of coffee tastes good, it cannot be generalized - different people have different preferences.
Using single-origin coffee beans to make espresso is simply to allow people who love espresso and milk coffee to taste the original flavor of the single-origin beans. If a single-origin bean has low recognition and most people cannot taste its unique flavor, then the significance of using SOE is lost.
FrontStreet Coffee Recommendations
If it's for coffee shop production, FrontStreet Coffee still recommends keeping blended coffee beans as the default option, which can further stabilize the production quality while also reducing costs, allowing for more suitable pricing for the general consumer base. Then, after the store operation is on track, decide whether to add SOE options based on the taste preferences of the main customer group, and which single-origin coffee beans to use for making SOE.
Currently, FrontStreet Coffee sells 4 types of espresso blended coffee beans. To ensure everyone can enjoy the most complete coffee flavor, FrontStreet Coffee ships all sold coffee beans within 5 days after roasting is completed.
