Mexico: A Land of Exotic Coffee

Mexico, this exotic place with deserts, blue waters, mountains, huge cities and small villages. In recent years, the demand for high-quality coffee has greatly increased buyers' interest in Mexican coffee, helping to elevate Mexico's status from previously blended coffee to single-origin and organic specialty products.

Chiapas: Premium Coffee Region

Chiapas is an important premium coffee-producing region in Mexico, with most premium beans grown mainly in high-altitude areas. Many high-altitude organic Mexican coffee beans are cultivated by indigenous people, who have organized numerous cooperatives to obtain assistance from foreign organizations, strive for better prices, promote advances in coffee cultivation techniques, and adopt organic farming methods to grow coffee.

CESMACH: Ecological Coffee Alliance

CESMACH is the Spanish abbreviation for Campesinos Ecológicos de la Sierra Madre de Chiapas (Ecological Farmers Alliance of the Chiapas Sierra Madre). The cooperative was established in 1994 and is located in the ecologically rich El Triunfo region of Mexico. Coffee farmers, in order not to damage the natural ecosystem, adapt to the local environment using organic cultivation methods, growing coffee under the shade of mist forests. Although such environments limit the planting area of Mexican coffee, the decaying leaves under the trees provide fertilizer nutrients for the coffee trees, while the diverse bird species in the ecological area also prevent pests in the coffee trees.

The CESMACH cooperative uses community development funds provided by fair trade to build warehouses, providing sufficient space and equipment for storing and packaging Mexican coffee, thereby improving quality and reducing costs.

Empowerment and Social Impact

In addition to being environmentally friendly, the CESMACH cooperative is also committed to women's empowerment. In the local area, because husbands often need to move to other regions for work, many women must take on the responsibility of caring for the entire family, often facing difficulties such as insufficient income and food shortages.

The CESMACH cooperative is one of the members of the Café Femenino Foundation. Café Femenino has long been concerned with women in coffee-producing regions around the world, providing diverse income channels, and fostering women's leadership and cooperative management, hoping to change the situation of women being unfairly treated and long neglected, developing their self-confidence and independence.
