The Prestige of Blue Mountain Coffee

Blue Mountain coffee beans are premium beans grown within the legally designated cultivation range in Jamaica, with their production process strictly supervised by the Jamaica Coffee Board. High-quality Blue Mountain coffee beans are renowned for their balanced, mild flavor, captivating aroma, and non-bitter taste. Through decades of effort, Blue Mountain coffee has established an unshakable reputation and become one of the world's most expensive and sought-after beans. Besides being used for brewing coffee, Blue Mountain is also an important ingredient in Tia Maria coffee liqueur.

Origin and Growing Conditions

Blue Mountain is located in the eastern part of Jamaica, approximately between the capital Kingston and Port Maria, with an altitude of up to 7,500 feet, making it one of the highest mountains in the Caribbean region. The climate is cool and foggy, with fertile soil, considered the most suitable conditions for growing coffee beans. However, only beans grown in the 3,000-5,500 feet elevation range can be called Jamaica Blue Mountain (the Mavis Bank introduced this time is grown at 3,900-5,250 feet). Some might ask: what about above 5,500 feet? Because areas above 5,500 feet in Jamaica are forest protection zones, coffee trees cannot be planted there. Beans below 3,000 feet are commonly found in the market as Jamaica High Mountain, Jamaica Prime, or even Jamaica Low Mountain—typically produced from "Jamaican coffee beans outside the designated Blue Mountain area."

Classification Standards

Jamaica Blue Mountain Bean Classification: Essential requirement: Produced from the designated Blue Mountain growing area, elevation 3,000-5,500 feet.

Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Bean Classification: Grown outside the designated Blue Mountain growing area, or within the designated Blue Mountain growing area but below the required elevation.

The quality standards of 100% pure certified Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee cannot be replaced by any other coffee, as strict and precise regulations have created one of the world's most exceptional coffees. Grown at high altitudes in a precise geographical location and under specific conditions, these coffee beans have earned Jamaica's certification as 100% pure Blue Mountain coffee beans. Due to limited production space, the quantity of coffee produced is limited. Coupled with its unique flavor profile and characteristics, demand is extremely high. The caffeine content is low, approximately half or even less than other varieties.

Why Dark Roast?

Why should Blue Mountain coffee be dark roasted? This is because when Blue Mountain was popular, the concept of specialty coffee didn't exist yet. At that time, coffee was primarily focused on rich, mellow flavor. Additionally, the greatest characteristic of Blue Mountain coffee is its balance and mellow taste. Therefore, the most suitable roast level for Blue Mountain coffee is dark roast, and the most authentic Blue Mountain is also dark roasted.

Brewing Recommendations

FrontStreet Coffee suggests using slightly lower water temperature when brewing Blue Mountain coffee—86-88°C is sufficient. Using a KONO dripper can enhance its mellow mouthfeel. The entry reveals chocolate's bittersweet notes, with prominent caramel sweetness, accompanied by gentle acidity.
