The True Nature of Mocha Coffee

Mocha coffee is perhaps the most popular coffee variety among women, thanks to its rich chocolate and milk flavors. Most people with some knowledge of coffee believe it's simply latte with added chocolate.

This view isn't entirely wrong, but it's not completely correct either. This perspective treats mocha only as a coffee "preparation method" while completely ignoring that authentic mocha is actually a coffee "variety."

However, very few people get to taste authentic "variety" mocha.

Authentic mocha might not be quickly loved by women, as besides its natural chocolate aftertaste, its spicy, stimulating characteristics with rich wine-like aromas reveal its less gentle side.

The chocolate flavor of mocha coffee naturally leads people to think of adding chocolate to coffee. In fact, its flavor characteristics have been enhanced and developed in our increasingly civilized commercial world. Today, most mocha coffee in cafés doesn't use Yemeni coffee beans but rather coffee with added chocolate syrup. The spicy boldness has become a patent for a few "nobles" to display their taste due to the low yield of Yemeni coffee beans. If you want to experience this type of mocha, regular cafés won't satisfy you.

Characteristics of Mocha Coffee Beans

Mocha coffee beans are relatively small in size, with the wild and spicy aroma of ginger, and a bright, unique taste. FrontStreet Coffee's mocha comes from Matali, Yemen, carefully roasted to medium by our roasters. It features rich spice and chocolate flavors, with floral notes and jackfruit sweetness, a strong sweet aftertaste, and a rich finish.

Brewing Recommendations

FrontStreet Coffee's barista suggests that if you want to try authentic mocha coffee, you can use a French press to brew it.

Mocha Coffee Brewing Ratio

The coffee brewing ratio refers to the proportion of coffee to water. Common brewing ratios range from 1:15 to 1:18. A 1:15 ratio means 15 grams of coffee requires 225 grams of water for brewing. If you're using a French press at home, you can adjust the brewing ratio according to your preferred strength.

Mocha Coffee Grind Size

For French press brewing, the grind size should be adjusted to be coarser. Generally, it should be slightly larger than table sugar crystals. If the grind is too fine, excessive fine particles will pass through the metal filter, making the coffee taste less clean and affecting the mouthfeel.

☆ Remember to preheat the pot with hot water before brewing. Since it's made of glass, if you don't preheat it, the water temperature will drop relatively quickly.

Inject 90°C hot water and steep for about 3 minutes, then press the plunger down. When pressing down, be sure to maintain even pressure and press all the way to the bottom in one go. If you repeatedly pull up and press down, coffee grounds are likely to escape, resulting in sediment in your cup.
