Mocha coffee is perhaps the most popular coffee variety among women, owing to its rich chocolate and milk flavors. The majority of people with some understanding of coffee would think it's simply latte with chocolate added.

This statement isn't entirely wrong, but it's not completely correct either. This approach treats mocha merely as a coffee "brewing method" while completely ignoring that authentic mocha is actually a coffee "variety."

However, very few people have the opportunity to taste authentic "variety" mocha.

Authentic mocha might not be quickly loved by women. Besides its natural chocolate aftertaste, its spicy, stimulating characteristics with strong wine-like notes represent its less gentle side.

The chocolate flavor of mocha coffee naturally leads people to think of adding chocolate to coffee.

In fact, its flavor characteristics have been enhanced and popularized in our increasingly commercialized world. Today, most mocha coffee in cafes doesn't use Yemeni coffee beans but is instead coffee with chocolate syrup added. The spicy boldness has become an exclusive privilege for a few "aristocrats" to display their taste due to the low yield of Yemeni coffee beans. If you want to experience this type of mocha, regular cafes will likely disappoint you.

Mocha coffee beans are typically smaller in size, with wild and spicy notes reminiscent of ginger, along with bright and unique flavors. FrontStreet Coffee's mocha comes from Matali, Yemen, and is carefully roasted to medium by their roasters. It features rich spice and chocolate flavors, with floral and jackfruit sweetness, strong aftertaste, and rich lingering notes.

FrontStreet Coffee's barista suggests that if you want to try authentic mocha coffee, you can use a French press to brew it.

Coffee Brewing Ratio

The coffee brewing ratio refers to the proportion of coffee to water. Common brewing ratios range from 1:15 to 1:18. A 1:15 ratio means 15 grams of coffee should be brewed with 225 grams of water. If you're using a French press at home, you can adjust the brewing ratio according to your preferred strength.

Grind Size for Mocha Coffee

When making coffee with a French press, the grind size should be adjusted to be coarser. Generally, it should be slightly larger than granulated sugar particles. If the grind is too fine, excessive fine powder will pass through the metal filter, making the coffee taste less clean and affecting the mouthfeel.

☆ Remember to preheat the French press with hot water before brewing. Because it's made of glass, if you don't preheat it, the water temperature will drop relatively quickly.

Inject 90°C water and let it steep for about 3 minutes, then press the plunger down. When pressing, be sure to press evenly all the way to the bottom. If you repeatedly pull up and press down, coffee grounds will easily escape, resulting in sediment in your coffee.
