Next, FrontStreet Coffee will talk with everyone about how to distinguish the authenticity of Blue Mountain coffee~!
How to distinguish the authenticity of Blue Mountain coffee?
1. Coffee bean price
The Blue Mountain coffee industry faces a series of problems, such as the impact of hurricanes, increased labor costs, and the difficulty of mechanizing terraced fields. Many small estates and farms find it difficult to rationalize cultivation, so the annual production of Blue Mountain coffee is not large. Therefore, the amount of Blue Mountain coffee beans that can be imported in each region is limited, and the price of Blue Mountain No.1 roasted coffee beans sold domestically is generally around 150-300 RMB. Currently, FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaican Blue Mountain No.1 coffee beans are priced at 158/100g.
2. Look for Blue Mountain coffee wooden barrels
The Jamaican government stipulates that all exported Blue Mountain must be packed in wooden barrels. Therefore, Blue Mountain No.1 coffee beans are exported in entire barrels packed in wooden barrels. So when buying coffee beans, you can pay attention to whether the seller has whole Blue Mountain barrels. This can avoid sellers using other coffee beans to pass off as Blue Mountain coffee beans.
3. Look for the certificate of origin
Buyers of Blue Mountain coffee beans (first-hand raw bean buyers) can apply for a certification certificate for Blue Mountain coffee beans from the Jamaican CIB or the estate. This can also prove that the Blue Mountain coffee beans are authentic. Therefore, when purchasing, you can pay attention to whether the seller has a certification certificate issued by the Jamaican government/origin.
Currently, the authentic Blue Mountain single-origin coffee beans available domestically are all of Blue Mountain No.1 grade. At FrontStreet Coffee's physical store, you can see the wooden barrels stipulated by the Jamaican government for exporting Blue Mountain coffee, as well as the certificate of origin for Blue Mountain coffee (Clifton Estate).
Why is Blue Mountain No.1 the highest grade?
CIB was the first institution to use scientific and objective methods to grade the quality of coffee, combining raw bean size, color, uniformity, defect rate, moisture content, and cupping performance for grading.
Before export, Blue Mountain raw beans will be packed and sent for quality testing, graded according to size and defect rate after processing: Blue Mountain No.1, Blue Mountain No.2, Blue Mountain No.3, and Blue Mountain Peaberry. The size of the beans will be determined using various mesh sizes - coffee beans that do not pass through the sieve holes meet the specifications of the standard used. Top-grade Blue Mountain No.1 raw beans must meet specifications of 17 mesh or above, defect rate below 3%, moisture content around 13%, and present rich coffee aroma in cupping, with smooth, balanced texture, low and weak acidity, and long-lasting sweet aftertaste.
To ensure that Blue Mountain coffee beans maintain better quality until roasting and avoid moisture infiltration during transportation, Jamaicans insist on using handcrafted wooden barrels as the carrier for Blue Mountain raw beans. Wooden barrels have also become one of the important symbols of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee.
FrontStreet Coffee's roasting philosophy aims to present the most classic flavor profile of coffee, such as the bright lemon acidity of Yirgacheffe, the rich caramelized texture of Indonesian Mandheling coffee, and naturally, Blue Mountain should also highlight its classic Blue Mountain flavor. FrontStreet Coffee uses medium-dark roasting to maximize the presentation of chocolate and nutty aromas in the coffee while retaining soft acidity and sweetness, making the overall texture tend toward balance.
