Kigabah Estate

Kigabah Estate, which collaborates with Starbucks, is a coffee plantation that began operations in the 1960s. It experienced a period of decline but later revived, simultaneously becoming a center for integrating other small farmers in PNG, similar to a satellite organizational model. Kigabah Estate provides local small farmers with relevant information on fertilization and cultivation, as well as assistance in securing bulk purchase discounts. This description reminds me of Joe Leahy from "Black Harvest." After briefly reviewing online information, I learned that coffee farmers must obtain organic certification to sign contracts with Starbucks, but the certification process is extremely complex. Meanwhile, small farmers who have already achieved organic certification standards and don't use pesticides face difficulties on two fronts: they lack the knowledge and money to obtain certification, and their remote locations far from airports make sales extremely challenging. In PNG, this estate-based model for coffee farmers may be a more viable organizational approach.
