World's Top Ten Most Expensive Coffees

According to Forbes' 2006 recommendation of the world's ten most expensive coffees: Geisha Coffee (Hacienda la Esmeralda Geisha), Kopi Luwak, Island of St. Helena Coffee, El Injerto, Fazenda Santa Ines, Blue Mountain, Los Planes, Kona Coffee, Starbucks Rwanda Blue Bourbon, and Yauco Selecto Coffee.

St. Helena Coffee

St. Helena Coffee can be traced back to 1733, when the British East India Company brought seeds for cultivation. The commercial purpose of bringing coffee at that time is difficult to determine, but it was planted everywhere and flourished without care. During this period, Napoleon was also exiled to this island after his defeat, and this tragic hero added more color to St. Helena Coffee. Napoleon left an eternal famous quote: "Coffee is the only good thing on St. Helena Island!" After these two to three hundred years, a British visitor David R. Henry restarted the rebirth path of St. Helena Coffee, and finally, it has allowed coffee lovers to taste what is called the concept of top-grade!

Sandy Bay Estate Production

St. Helena Coffee produced by Sandy Bay Estate is of the Green Tipped Bourbon variety, grown at an altitude of 1,000 meters and processed by the washed method. Coffee beans produced on St. Helena Island, regardless of which estate they come from, are centrally processed by the St. Helena Coffee Company.

Quality and Distribution

St. Helena Coffee has no grading; all coffee sold by the St. Helena Coffee Company is of the highest quality, so the annual supply is quite limited. St. Helena has no air transportation service, so all beans are first shipped by sea to nearby towns with air transportation services, which takes about 5 days. The St. Helena Coffee Company marks each shipment for air transportation at the time of shipment, so after arriving at towns with air service, no customs clearance or document signing is required, and they can naturally board the plane. After boarding the plane, it takes about a week to reach the customer.

Napoleon's Endorsement

Between 1815 and 1821, Napoleon was imprisoned on St. Helena Island, but coincidentally had the opportunity to taste the coffee here. After drinking it, he praised it highly, and subsequently, many people continued to marvel at this coffee.

Historical Recognition

In 1839, London coffee merchant Wm Burnie & Co said: "We received the sample of St. Helena green beans you sent. After our testing, we found that this coffee has extremely excellent quality, and its taste is also unique."

At that time [1845], St. Helena Coffee, at a price of one pound per pound, stood out in the world coffee market, becoming the most expensive and rarest coffee in the world at that time.

At the 1851 London Coffee Exhibition, G.W. Alexander sent St. Helena Coffee to London for exhibition, where it received extremely high evaluation from the judges.

Cultivation Varieties

Green Tipped Bourbon Arabica, Bourbon

This bean variety is a very delicate and fragile variety. Whether in cultivation, harvesting, washed processing, or roasting, extremely careful attention is required to ensure the creation of a wonderful cup of coffee. Green Tipped Bourbon Arabica is a coffee tree species from the Yemen region. At that time, it was transported by a ship called "Houghton" departing from Yemen's Mocha port, with the captain named Philips.

Once the seeds were brought to St. Helena Island, they were taken to different points on the island for planting. Since these locations were very appropriate, although after a long period of neglect, the coffee trees at these locations could grow vigorously.
