Ivory Coast Coffee Overview

Located on the west coast of Africa is the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast). This small country has a considerable coffee industry, although you're unlikely to find beans in specialty coffee shops.

Coffee Production Challenges

Ivory Coast coffee mainly consists of lower-grade production Robusta coffee beans. In recent years, Ivory Coast has seen a decline in coffee production primarily due to lack of investment and planning.

Historically, most of Ivory Coast's coffee was sold in France and Italy.

Ivory Coast Coffee Production

The Republic of Côte d'Ivoire is a West African country with an English name Ivory Coast, and a population of over 20 million. Neighboring countries include Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, and Burkina Faso. The country's southern border lies along the Gulf of Guinea.

Ivory Coast's main agricultural export products include coffee, palm oil, cocoa beans, and tropical timber.

Political Issues Hindering Ivory Coast

In March 2011, Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo announced the nationalization of the country's cocoa and coffee crops (Ivory Coast's two main economic crops), despite his efforts to retain power.

The winner of the November 2010 presidential election, Alassane Ouattara, found himself in a difficult position trying to get Gbagbo to relinquish power, which led to civil war and humanitarian crisis.

Ivory Coast is the world's largest cocoa exporter, and this industry is crucial as a source of income for the military and civil servants. Ouattara called for a ban on cocoa and coffee exports in January 2011 to reduce funding to Gbagbo and force him to relinquish power.

Coffee Industry Development

After World War II, the local coffee economy experienced a significant boom. By the 1970s, Ivory Coast was the world's third-largest coffee exporter and, for a short time, became the largest producer of Robusta coffee. However, by 2000, due to political turmoil and civil war, the coffee industry had lost some momentum. More fortunately, the current stable government expects the industry to achieve 400% growth by 2020.

Since almost all coffee grown is Robusta, the typical flavor profile includes chocolate, nutty, earthy, and spicy dark notes, along with a characteristic strong bitterness.

Common Flavor Profile:

  • Low acidity
  • Medium body
  • Chocolate, nutty, earthy, spicy notes

Common Processing Methods:

  • Washed
  • Natural
