Ecuador Coffee Industry Background

Ecuador's coffee cultivation area reaches 305,000 hectares, with Arabica coffee accounting for 68% and Robusta coffee for 32%. Coffee, cocoa, and bananas are Ecuador's three major traditional crops, not only providing income sources for farmers and foreign exchange for the country, but also serving as important crops for employment and social stability.

Due to the sharp decline in international coffee prices around 2000, Ecuador's coffee cultivation gradually shrank, and its share in world coffee production also decreased. By 2009, Ecuador's coffee production accounted for only 1% of the world total. However, Ecuador's coffee export volume has gradually increased, mainly because Ecuador's instant coffee processing industry is well-developed, processing imported foreign coffee for re-export in addition to domestically produced coffee.

Ecuador's coffee plantations are generally not large, with about 80% of coffee farmers having cultivation areas below 5 hectares, 13% between 5 to 10 hectares, and only 7% with cultivation areas above 10 hectares. According to statistics, among the national cultivation area of about 300,000 hectares, 20% of coffee plantation land is illegally occupied. According to data from Ecuador's Coffee Association, the most important coffee-producing area in Ecuador is MANABI Province, while Imbabura Province accounts for a relatively low cultivation ratio.

The domestic coffee trade in Ecuador is very unique, mainly involving domestic buyers traveling to various small farmers to negotiate purchases. These intermediaries work tirelessly, moving from one village to another, visiting farmers individually to negotiate prices. The purchased coffee is centrally transported to a few coffee mills for processing, then transferred to export traders or processors. Ecuador's coffee processing industry is mainly located in the three major cities of Huayquil, Quito, and Manta, with only a few towns having traditional small-scale manual processors.

Finca Lugmapata Estate

This batch from Finca Lugmapata is owned by the Enrique Merino family and has been cultivated for over 100 years. It was started by Enrique's great-grandfather. When it passed to the second generation, the land was divided and inherited. Only Enrique's father did not sell the land and continued to grow coffee. When it passed to the third generation, Enrique Merino in 2018, the land area was 222 hectares. At the same time, Finca Lugmapata won first place in Ecuador's Golden Cup competition Taza Dorada in 2018. Therefore, this estate hopes to use this successful experience to further enhance the reputation and quality of the Chimborazo region.

Taza Dorada Competition

Taza Dorada (Golden Cup) is Ecuador's coffee competition, where specialty green coffee beans produced by various small farmers are evaluated by national and international judges. It can be seen as Ecuador's COE, but unlike the COE system, Taza Dorada does not have a system to assist winners after the competition. The award-winning green coffee batches are almost entirely booked by discerning buyers. This year, a total of 37 small farmers won awards, and this particular batch ranked 15th.

Currently, Ecuador's coffee cultivation is mostly operated by small farmers, accounting for over 90%, and the agricultural techniques are not as advanced as those in Central American coffee-producing countries, with lower yields. It is also rarely imported in Taiwan. Through this Ecuador Golden Cup competition, coffee lovers can taste this award-winning batch of high-quality Ecuadorian coffee.
