The Boquete Region: Panama's Premier Coffee Growing Area

The Boquete region is Panama's oldest and most famous coffee-growing area, located on the eastern side of Baru Volcano at altitudes ranging from approximately 1,200 to 2,000 meters above sea level. Among its notable features is the "Baru Volcano National Park," a national ecological conservation area with diverse and abundant biological species. The region boasts seven distinct microclimates, is consistently shrouded in mist, and receives abundant rainfall, creating ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. These unique factors enable the Boquete region to produce coffee with distinctive aromas, making it Panama's most productive and highest-quality coffee-growing area.

The Butterfly Coffee: An Exclusive Blend

'Butterfly' is an exclusive product developed through collaboration between Black Gold Specialty Coffee and Panama's Boquete region, available exclusively through their channels. Due to containing a certain proportion of the Geisha variety from the Boquete region (the same growing area as the renowned La Esmeralda estate), it has been extremely popular since its launch, with demand consistently outstripping supply. (It has been reported that counterfeit versions of Butterfly have appeared in the market, forcing the coffee merchant to issue clarifications.) The '2017 Butterfly' continues to be a blend of three varieties: Geisha, Caturra, and Catuai. Notably, the merchant increased the Geisha variety proportion to 70% this year—the highest Geisha content since Butterfly's introduction. According to information provided by the merchant, these coffee beans are grown at approximately 1,600 meters in volcanic areas. They are cultivated and harvested by small farmer members of cooperatives using Boquete's traditional meticulous methods, while post-harvest processing is handled by the nearby Café de Eleta SA. Although production is not large, the quality remains stable while also considering ecological environment preservation and soil quality maintenance.

The Geisha Variety: Coffee's Elegant Jewel

Geisha is one of the world's most original coffee varieties—some call it "Geisha," others translate it as "Geisha." Its name embodies gentleness and floral fragrance, making it an unforgettable coffee experience. It has become a consistent winner in international auctions and cupping competitions, receiving extremely high evaluations!

Boquete's Unique Terroir

Boquete is located in the high-altitude region of Panama's Baru Volcano. The local fertile soil, elevated terrain, cool humid air, variations in sunlight exposure, abundant rainfall, and converging river systems all contribute to creating premium Panama specialty coffee. The Boquete Butterfly shares the same growing region as the famous La Esmeralda estate, situated precisely where continuous valleys and ridges create multiple microclimates. Consequently, coffee produced in different sections often exhibits distinct flavor characteristics.

Flavor Profile and Composition

Butterfly is composed of 40% Geisha, 30% Caturra, and 30% Catuai varieties. It delivers a refreshing and comfortable citrus sensation with bright, floral tropical fruit flavors, moderate sweetness, and rich layering. Delicate floral notes interweave, creating an exceptionally elegant and generous flavor profile. Remarkably, Geisha's flavor combined with the other two bean varieties results in an overall more mellow character, with a lingering aftertaste that resonates like the delicate fragrance of jasmine flowers.

Baru Volcano's Rich Legacy

Baru Volcano is not only Panama's highest mountain range, but early volcanic activity and eruptions deposited substantial, extremely fertile soil. This soil is rich in nutrients, with volcanic ash particularly abundant in phosphorus and sulfur. Combined with clay and unique climate patterns, this creates an environment perfectly suited for premium coffee growth. The dense forests and numerous species contribute to overall biodiversity.

Sustainable Farming Practices

Approximately 50 coffee farmers in this area form a small cooperative, all adopting traditional Boquete methods for coffee production—allowing coffee to grow in a near-natural environment. Although production is not high, this approach maintains rich ecological environments while preserving or even improving soil quality. Natural cultivation methods benefit not only the environment but also result in superior, exceptionally flavorful coffee beans due to the slow growth of coffee cherries. Farmers hand-harvest complete coffee cherries and send them to the nearby Café de Eleta S.A. for post-harvest processing. The processing facility is located about 4 kilometers from the farms and includes a modern laboratory for cupping quality control and manual selection.

Exceptional Value

Even more surprisingly, on top of its excellent quality, the very approachable price makes this coffee bean's value proposition exceptional. The special characteristic of this coffee bean lies in its composition of three varieties, including 40% of the renowned Geisha, giving this coffee very distinct Geisha flavor characteristics.

Recommended Roasting Profile

Due to the special characteristics of the 'Butterfly' blend in terms of varieties, it is strongly recommended to roast it at a medium-light roast level to preserve the floral notes as well as the sweetness and elegant acidity of the fruit tones...
