History of Rwandan Coffee

In 1904, German missionaries introduced coffee to Rwanda, but it wasn't until 1917 that Rwanda's coffee production became substantial enough for export. By the 1990s, coffee had become Rwanda's most valuable agricultural export, yet a catastrophic event nearly destroyed the coffee industry.

The 1994 genocide claimed nearly 1 million lives and, combined with a sharp decline in national coffee prices, dealt a tremendous blow to the coffee industry. Following the genocide, coffee production has had a positive impact on Rwanda's overall recovery. With global attention focused on Rwanda and foreign aid, the coffee industry has begun receiving significant emphasis.

Rwanda Coffee Growing Regions

Coffee is cultivated throughout Rwanda, so there are no geographical growing region restrictions. When labeling, coffee roasters can use regional names combined with wet processing mill or coffee farmer group names.

The Potato Defect in Rwandan Coffee

Incidentally, coffees from Rwanda and Burundi may exhibit an uncommon off-flavor—the potato defect. This is caused by toxins produced when bacteria invade the coffee cherry's skin, though it is harmless to humans.

However, only a few coffee beans will have this flavor, so the problem can be solved by finding and removing these beans after roasting.

The Joy of Single-Origin Coffee

Many friends who haven't yet tried single-origin coffee often avoid black coffee. However, after an accidental tasting, they often exclaim, "I never knew coffee could be so interesting!"

Indeed, single-origin coffee is a fascinating process from tasting all the way back to its origin. Those who view drinking coffee as a habit and trace its flavors and cultural roots will truly experience the joy of coffee!
