Harar Coffee Characteristics
As a general conventional variety from the Harar region in western Ethiopia, the tree species is robust and characterized by high coffee yields; however, it is very susceptible to disease. The green beans are processed using the dry method, which preserves the original mocha flavor and gives it a wild character.
Harar is the most complex and diverse in flavor among Ethiopian coffees. Different roasting conditions will produce different tastes and flavors. Harar has a complex, rich aroma, sometimes with blueberry notes, and medium-dark roasting will bring out chocolate flavors. The acidity is fresh and pleasant, with a mellow body that leaves people wanting more and with an endless aftertaste.
This is the birthplace of coffee, and this fact alone is exciting. Moreover, Ethiopian coffee is a highly regarded specialty coffee.
Ethiopian coffee is mostly grown in small farms or in semi-wild and wild states, using organic farming methods. Combined with suitable altitude and precipitation, this creates the high quality of Ethiopian coffee.
The main coffee producing regions in Ethiopia include Harar, Kaffa (legendedly the place where coffee was discovered), Sidamo, and others. Today, let's share one of the famous varieties among them—Harar coffee.
Harar: The Historic City
Harar is an important city in Ethiopia, not only one of the four holy cities of Islam but also once the capital of Ethiopia. It is an ancient city with a long history. The Harar region has the most suitable altitude for Arabica coffee growth and is the highest altitude coffee production area in Ethiopia. What kind of characteristics make Harar coffee famous far and wide, with a large number of fans even in the absence of brand packaging?
Distinctive Features of Harar Coffee
Harar's Wonderful Aroma
This seems to be a common characteristic of African coffee. Whether in Kenyan coffee or Ethiopian coffee, you will smell fruit aromas that are either light or strong, as if you are in a room full of fruits, which is intoxicating.
Harar's Mellow Taste and Subtle Acidity
Harar coffee seems to incorporate the entire history of Ethiopia. A light sip will give you the rich feeling of thick liquid flowing between the lips and teeth. The subtle acidity is just right, making people feel that they want more and have an endless aftertaste.
Harar's Long Aftertaste and Pleasant Sweet Finish
Harar coffee has a balanced taste with no particularly obvious characteristics, but the aftertaste is very long and the sweet finish is pleasant. After drinking, the coffee aroma will remain in the mouth for a long time, making people intoxicated in the wonderful feeling of coffee for a long time, just as tasting history always makes you not want to return to reality too quickly. Harar coffee will remind you of that legendary coffee country and extremely beautiful memories.
