Narino is located in southern Colombia, bordering Ecuador to the west, the famous producing region Cauca to the north, and Huila producing region to the east. It is one of the three major producing areas in southern Colombia (Cauca, Huila, Narino), known for producing high-quality coffee with rich fruity acidity, good sweetness, medium body, and abundant nutty characteristics. It's an excellent choice for single-origin blends or drip coffee.

● This Colombian Narino comes from a small farmers' cooperative in the town of La Union, established in 2003, with 21 partners and 100 small farming families. Each small farmer can produce from 5-10 bags of coffee, and they have always aimed to achieve value addition for farmers and communities while improving coffee quality.

▲ You probably have many questions about these beans, let's move on to Q&A time—

Let's expand our knowledge together

Q1

● Why can Colombian Narino produce high-quality coffee, especially with rich fruity acidity?

Due to Narino's unique geographical environment, close to the equator and in high mountain areas, Narino's average cultivation altitude is relatively high, reaching about 2000 meters. The region's average temperature is the lowest among all Colombian producing regions, with an annual average of 19.9 degrees Celsius, ranging from a minimum of 16 degrees Celsius to a maximum of 25.9 degrees Celsius.

The impact of lower temperatures on coffee cultivation and growth is that it slows down the growth cycle of coffee. In a longer growth cycle, coffee can accumulate more sugar and form more organic acid substances. These sugars and organic acid substances ultimately form the unique acidity and sweetness of coffee in this producing region.

However, the relatively low growth temperature also causes coffee plants in the Narino producing region to be shorter compared to other regions (1.5 meters compared to about 2 meters in other regions), and yields are also relatively lower (up to 50% difference). Therefore, the price is also higher.

Q2

● Why is it called Colombian Narino?

Good question, actually its name doesn't have much to do with coffee.

Out of pure curiosity, we also checked relevant information. It comes from Antonio Nariño, one of the pioneers of early Colombian independence. Due to Narino's unique terrain with many mountains and canyons, the early Incas used this advantage to defend against external enemies more easily, which also gradually influenced the people of the Narino region to achieve earlier independence and autonomy, developing their own culture.
