The Rise of Elephant Dung Coffee

The booming sales of elephant dung coffee have instantly snatched the title of "most expensive coffee" from civet coffee. But when you think about it carefully, this makes no sense at all—

Elephants mainly feed on tender branches and leaves, wild fruits, grass, young bamboo, wild vegetables, and other plants. Coffee cherries are probably something they love to eat. (Much better than grass, right?) But elephants certainly wouldn't run into coffee plantations, so if elephants can eat coffee, it's basically all through feeding.

Understanding Civet Coffee Production

Let's first look at what civet coffee is all about. The production process is as follows:

1. Civets love to eat the ripe red coffee cherries from coffee trees;

2. Workers manually pick out undigested coffee seeds from the civet feces;

3. After removing the silver-gray film from the coffee seeds, they are washed with water and dried in the sun;

4. The raw coffee beans are then roasted.

There's a key point here: civets are creatures that primarily feed on coffee cherries, and they have their own unique method of selecting coffee cherries. The beans they select are basically all good beans, and this is something humans cannot replace. Therefore, the method of feeding elephants coffee cherries is completely inferior!

PS: Most civet coffee on the market today is actually from farmed civets.

The Cleanliness Factor

Coffee beans are wrapped in a seed coat that cannot be digested by a civet's stomach. During production, the seed coat is first removed through washing, revealing the coffee beans inside. Therefore, the coffee beans we actually drink never come into direct contact with feces, and they undergo high-temperature roasting afterward. So civet coffee is actually very clean!

However, elephant dung coffee is actually fed artificially, so the quality of the beans cannot be guaranteed. It's all hype and gimmickry!

Personal Perspective on "Dung Coffee"

Regarding "dung coffee," I've always maintained a reserved attitude. Everyone has their own understanding of what good coffee is.

Everyone knows that Blue Mountain coffee is good, but I want to ask everyone: do you really drink black coffee regularly? Do you really understand why Blue Mountain coffee is good? Understanding the excellence of Blue Mountain coffee must be built on the premise that you've tasted various black coffees. Otherwise, a cup of Blue Mountain is really not as delicious as a cup of milk.
