Costa Rica produces the most consistently high-quality coffee in Central America. Coffee production in Costa Rica has a very long history, with exports dating back to the 19th century when coffee was first shipped to England. In Costa Rica, cultivation of Robusta varieties (used for canned coffee) is legally prohibited - only Arabica varieties are permitted. The regions producing the highest quality coffee are Tarrazú, West Valley, and Central Valley. In recent years, coffee production has decreased due to rising land costs and higher cultivation expenses, making fine coffee increasingly difficult to obtain.

Coope Tarrazu RL (Tarrazú Cooperative) was established in 1960, starting with 228 small coffee growers. Today, they are Costa Rica's largest coffee cooperative, with 3,000 producers who collectively produce over 110,000 bags of green coffee.
