The Arrival of Autumn
As the leaves gradually turn yellow and cool breezes begin to blow, autumn has quietly arrived unnoticed.
Every autumn, people are reminded of cool weather, warm-toned scenery, and a hot cup of coffee. Each year, Starbucks also launches a blended coffee bean featuring autumn leaf-colored packaging to welcome autumn and Thanksgiving.
Introduction to Starbucks Autumn Blend
The Autumn Blend coffee beans (also known as Thanksgiving Blend coffee beans). For the packaging, designers used orange (maple leaf) colors that blend into autumn as the main tone, immersing oneself in the atmosphere of autumn, with colorful falling leaves, to experience the feeling of autumn wind brushing across maple leaves. This coffee bean has been available since 2008, and from 2008-2011, the Autumn Blend coffee beans were called Thanksgiving Blend coffee beans.
Starbucks hopes that when people drink this coffee, they can feel the warmth of nature, and while being grateful to humanity, also be grateful to nature. Therefore, they created a coffee bean that has a natural flavor and autumn aroma, while also being suitable for pairing with traditional Thanksgiving dishes and desserts.
Therefore, Starbucks selected coffee beans from the Indonesia Sumatra region + Guatemala region, creating this coffee blend with characteristics of being rich, sweet, smooth, and having herbal aromas.
Introduction to Indonesia Sumatra Region
As a large archipelagic country, Indonesia inherently has excellent coffee growing environments and latitudes. Each island has different characteristics due to varying terrain and climate. Among them, Sumatra Island is the main place in Indonesia where Arabica coffee is grown. The Mandheling coffee, deeply loved by many coffee connoisseurs, comes from here. (Note: Mandheling is a coffee name, not a region, generally referring to Arabica coffee grown on Sumatra Island, named after the local Mandheling ethnic group).
On Sumatra Island, there are two main coffee-growing regions: one is the Aceh region in northern Sumatra, represented by FrontStreet Coffee's PWN Golden Mandheling coffee beans, and the other is the Linton region around Lake Toba (Danau Toba) in central and southern Sumatra, represented by FrontStreet Coffee's Daily Selection Linton Mandheling coffee beans.
The difference between the two is that PWN Golden Mandheling coffee beans undergo at least three rounds of pure manual selection after harvest and drying processing, ensuring that the coffee beans reach a size of 18 or above. Defective beans are fewer than 3 (in a 300g raw bean sample), belonging to the highest G1 grade. PWN beans have a darker green color and are flat beans with uniform shapes.
Many beans on the market that are not produced by PWN company but labeled as Golden Mandheling can actually only be called specialty Mandheling. Authentic PWN Mandheling coffee beans will have certification certificates issued by the PWN company.
In terms of flavor, Linton region Mandheling coffee has rich herbal aroma, black chocolate, caramel, and sweet aftertaste when entered. PWN Golden Mandheling coffee is rich and clean when entered, with intense nut and caramel aromas, chocolate notes, persistent finish, and high balance.
Introduction to Guatemala Antigua Region
Guatemala's Antigua Valley has always been the most renowned coffee region in Guatemala. The local microclimate provides excellent conditions for growing coffee - rich volcanic soil, low humidity, abundant sunlight, and strong day-night temperature differences, all combine to create the unique character of Antigua region coffee.
The active volcanoes within Guatemala bring fertile volcanic soil to the Antigua region, as well as unique volcanic pumice. These cooled materials from volcanic magma eruptions have porous and insulating properties, which are very suitable for maintaining moisture in the soil,正好弥补了产区降雨量少的问题. At the same time, combined with the common shade trees in this area, moisture is less likely to be lost while making coffee fruits have more unique flavors.
Coffee grown in Guatemala has soft fruit acidity, nuts, caramel, and slight smoky flavors. Representative works include FrontStreet Coffee's Antigua La Flor de Café coffee beans. Unlike coffee beans from other Antigua regions, Flor de Café coffee beans are provided with professional and rigorous cultivation techniques by the famous La Minita estate, showcasing the bright and clean "goddess" posture of Flor de Café.
In terms of flavor, Flor de Café coffee beans have very pleasant and elegant floral main flavors, with soft acidity ending in chocolate-like notes, overall clean and bright taste.
How to Brew Starbucks Autumn Blend, Indonesia Region, and Antigua Region Coffee Beans?
All three types of coffee beans are relatively rich and solid in taste, so FrontStreet Coffee recommends using a Kono dripper for drip extraction.
Compared to the common V60 dripper, the Kono dripper's ribs only extend from the filter hole to 1/3 of the dripper wall. When the filter paper fits the dripper, air cannot directly penetrate the entire dripper, thus slowing down the dripping speed of water flow, achieving a soaking effect and helping coffee flavor substances release more fully.
For parameters, FrontStreet Coffee recommends using medium-coarse grind (raw sugar size, 70-75% pass rate on China No. 20 standard sieve), 88°C water temperature, 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio paired with KONO dripper.
For brewing technique, FrontStreet Coffee recommends using segmented extraction. Specific brewing method: Press the timer. First pour 30g of water, then 30s bloom; Next, perform a second small amount of circular pouring until total weight reaches 125g; Wait until the water level in the coffee bed drops to half before pouring water again, then continue with small amounts of circular pouring until total weight reaches 225g. After all dripping is complete, the total extraction time is about 2 minutes and 10 seconds.
