Guatemala's Unique Coffee Regions
Although Guatemala is a small country, it is one of the regions with the most complex microclimates in the world. In this country, soil, rainfall, humidity, altitude, and temperature vary completely across different areas, forming eight distinct coffee-producing regions in Guatemala.
We have previously explored in depth the important role and impact of shade-grown cultivation on coffee and the environment (World Environment Day | When we talk about coffee shade plants, what are we talking about?). It is said that this shade cultivation method used in coffee growing (planting tall crops like banana trees around coffee trees to create artificial shade) originated in Antigua, Guatemala.
Antigua Coffee: Classic and Distinctive
Grown in volcanic regions, Antigua coffee is proud of its complex flavors, with acidity ranging from light to deep in various layers, rich and fascinating.
Antigua is honored with the name "Classic" mainly because it is Guatemala's oldest and most famous coffee-producing region. Rich volcanic soil, low humidity, abundant sunlight, and significant temperature differences between day and night are all classic characteristics of Antigua. This valley is surrounded by three volcanoes: Agua, Acetenango, and Fuego. Among them, Fuego is one of Guatemala's three most active volcanoes, providing continuous volcanic ash and minerals to the region's soil.
The Authenticity of Antigua Coffee
Among the coffee beans Guatemala sells globally, 180,000-200,000 bags are labeled as Antigua coffee. However, the actual annual production of pure Antigua does not exceed 80,000 bags. This means that only 30-40% of Antigua in the global market is genuinely pure Antigua. Therefore, Antigua produced in surrounding regions, and even in countries outside Guatemala, is later categorized into three types: GENUINE, TYPE, and ANTIGUA. Only truly genuine Antigua is the high-quality Antigua.
