Guatemala Antigua Coffee

Behind every proud coffee there is a story, and Antigua's leads back to the agricultural wisdom of the region's ancient peoples, whose generations of cultivation shaped the exceptional coffee we enjoy today.

Guatemala Antigua is one of the world's great coffees, tracing its lineage to Bourbon stock first identified in the 15th century on "Réunion," a small island east of "Madagascar" then under French rule.

"Antigua City" served as the capital as early as 1543, during the Spanish colonial period. Despite its emerald mountains, lofty ridges, and layered valleys, its greatest gift is the ring of imposing active volcanoes that surrounds it, making the naturally favored soil even more fertile — like sweet dew from heaven moistening the earth. Combine that with the climate, the rainfall, and the rest of nature's handiwork, and the coffee that grows here is simply exceptional.

Grown across Antigua's vast highlands, where the temperature swings sharply between morning and evening, the beans mature more slowly than average — raising their density and sharpening the coffee's flavor. The beans are also harder than usual, ranking at the top SHB (Strictly Hard Bean) grade.

Those SHB (Strictly Hard Bean) beans carry rich, layered complexity, so Guatemala Antigua shows prominent fruit acidity, a rich and slightly wild coffee texture, abundant fruit character, the sweetness of blackcurrant, fresh jasmine fragrance, and a one-of-a-kind smoky note. A medium-light roast suits it best — and pour-over brewing, above all, brings out the most charming and distinctive side of Guatemala Antigua.

Antigua Coffee Bean Brand Recommendations

FrontStreet Coffee's roasted Guatemala Antigua beans — the [Flora] lot — carry full brand and quality guarantees, and the value is outstanding: a half-jin 227-gram package costs only about 85 yuan. At 15 grams per single-origin cup, one package brews 15 cups — roughly 5-6 yuan each. Against café prices of dozens of yuan a cup, that's exceptional value.

FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation

Antigua's vibrant acidity and florals shine brightest as pour-over — and the V60 dripper is the ideal tool. Designed by Hario of Tokyo (founded 1921 as a scientific-glassware maker) and relaunched in its modern form in 2004, the V60's 60° cone and single large outlet let the brewer control the flow completely, extending water-and-grounds contact so delicate aromatics extract fully — exactly what third-wave coffee celebrates. Two FrontStreet Coffee pour-over picks in that floral-fruity style:

FrontStreet Washed Yirgacheffe Guodingding (Ethiopia) — the first stop for most coffee lovers entering specialty. Vivid citrus, berry, and jasmine florals with a green-tea-like sweet finish; the acidity is soft and bright, like fruit itself rather than anything harsh. An easy, rewarding cup for any beginner on a V60.

FrontStreet Ethiopia Huakui (natural process) — one of specialty coffee's biggest stars of recent years, with striking tropical fruit aromatics: strawberry, passion fruit, jackfruit, even lychee. Sweetness is pronounced, bitterness nearly absent, and the cup is silky and juice-filled — often called "the coffee for people who don't like coffee." If you loved Antigua's fruit-forward profile, this is the natural next step.
