To be honest, I previously didn't have a deep impression of Rwanda coffee. I only got to know this bean through the Rwanda Pavilion. Its flavor tends to be acidic, but after drinking it, the aftertaste was endless, making me fall in love with this African bean...
Rwanda Coffee Cultivation
Since the 1920s, Arabica coffee grown in Rwanda has been renowned worldwide for its unique fruity sweetness and rich grassy aroma. In recent years, the Rwandan government has taken active measures to vigorously promote coffee production, establishing coffee production cooperatives in various regions, providing technical guidance and financial support to farmers, enabling significant development in coffee production.
Rwanda Coffee Processing
Rwanda coffee, like many African countries, is mainly produced by small farmers. During the harvest season each year, mature coffee cherries are collected and sent to processing stations. During the harvest period, farmers pick mature coffee berries and concentrate them at processing stations for treatment. First, manual selection ensures that no unripe or damaged fruits are mixed in. Next, the pulp is removed, followed by a 12-18 hour washed fermentation process in a cool, low-temperature environment. Then, the adhering pectin is cleaned in channels. During the rack drying process, members of the processing station manually turn them, carefully tending to ensure that under sufficient sunlight, the parchment coffee beans do not lose moisture or have uneven drying conditions, until the moisture content of the raw beans stabilizes below 14%.
Rwanda Coffee Origins
Rwanda has approximately 33,000 hectares of coffee plantations, with 500,000 people engaged in coffee cultivation. With favorable natural conditions of high altitude and fertile volcanic soil, the country's fertile soil and suitable climate contribute to plant growth. Coffee trees seem to be driven or forced to grow upwards rapidly, as if growing too fast to produce premium coffee beans. The beautiful "Land of a Thousand Hills" Rwanda has a long and rich culture of growing highland coffee, mainly focusing on planting high-quality Arabica coffee. Rwanda is one of the few countries in the world that can fully enjoy the harmony between soil, altitude, and climate. In this unique growing environment, Rwanda's high-quality coffee possesses a distinctive taste and aroma. The Bourbon coffee grown in Rwanda is one of the original varieties of Arabica coffee.
Rwanda Coffee Characteristics
The flavor of Rwanda coffee is described as "grassy aroma" with tropical climate characteristics. Besides the fruity sweetness presented in this coffee, it simultaneously allows people to taste a refreshing, bright, and fresh feeling. The Bourbon coffee grown in Rwanda is remarkable for its fruity sweetness, with a rich and full aroma that has absolutely no astringency, leaving a long aftertaste. This coffee has a delicious, citrusy sweet fragrance and a deep chocolate color.
