Rwanda Aims to Boost Coffee Export Volume and Quality

Rwanda's National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB) recently announced that the country is striving to increase both the volume and quality of exported coffee, with a target export volume of 24,500 tons for 2018.

Célestin Gatalayi, manager of NAEB's coffee department, stated that Rwanda's coffee export volume was 22,000 tons in 2016, increased to 23,000 tons in 2017, and will continue to maintain this growth trend in 2018.

Gatalayi revealed that by 2024, Rwanda plans to plant 34,000 new coffee trees. Through proper fertilizer application and integrated pest management measures, coffee production capacity is expected to double.

"We are working hard to strengthen control of a pest called Antestia stink bug, which can affect up to 30% of coffee if not properly controlled. However, since pesticides pollute the environment and damage biodiversity, we are seeking domestically produced, environmentally friendly pesticides. Once the quality of exported coffee improves, prices will also increase accordingly," Gatalayi said.

Economic Challenges Faced by Rwandan Coffee Farmers

Alfred Bizoza, associate professor of agricultural economics at the University of Rwanda, explained that low prices have led to continued low coffee production in the country. Coffee cherries sell for only 177 Rwandan francs (approximately 1.3 RMB) per kilogram, while production input costs reach as high as 300 Rwandan francs (approximately 2.3 RMB) per kilogram. Bizoza encourages farmers in cooperatives to increase production, but currently only 14% of coffee-growing farmers have joined cooperatives.

Bizoza explained that research shows in 2015, cooperative growers could harvest 1.5 kilograms of coffee per coffee tree, while non-cooperative growers harvested 1.4 kilograms per tree. In 2017, cooperative members harvested 2 kilograms of coffee per tree, while non-cooperative members harvested only 1.47 kilograms.

Isaac Nsabamahoro, a member of the Dukunde Kawa cooperative in Rwanda, stated that farmers can now sell coffee cherries for 240 Rwandan francs (approximately 1.8 RMB) per kilogram, but this is still a losing business. To achieve profitability, the minimum price for coffee cherries should be at least 280 Rwandan francs (approximately 2.1 RMB) per kilogram.
