Americano Coffee & American Coffee Machines
Typically designed with two layers, an American coffee machine works by placing pre-ground coffee beans in an upper funnel-shaped container equipped with filter paper or a metal filter. The lower chamber consists of a glass or ceramic coffee pot. Cold water is poured into a separate compartment. When activated, the cold water is heated to approximately 90°C and gradually introduced into the funnel-shaped container, allowing hot water to pass through the coffee grounds and flow into the coffee pot below.
In addition to brewing coffee, this type of coffee machine can also be used to brew tea.
American Coffee: Atmospheric Extraction
Generally brewed using an American drip coffee maker, it shares one similarity with espresso machines: both allow hot water to pass through coffee grounds to extract coffee. However, the difference lies in the fact that the water is at normal atmospheric pressure.
Other Differences
1. American coffee machines operate without pressure, producing only black coffee, which is Americano coffee. They cannot make other specialty coffee drinks.
2. Espresso machines operate with pressure and can produce espresso with a rich crema. Some pure espresso shots can be paired with milk to make lattes, or with milk foam to make cappuccinos, as well as other specialty coffee drinks.
3. Price: American coffee machines are available in good quality for around 200 RMB. Espresso machines range in price from 700 to over 100,000 RMB.
PS: Americano coffee was born after World War II when American soldiers came to Southern Europe. They couldn't drink espresso, so they diluted it with warm water. This was the only concentration they could accept, so people named it Americano coffee. Therefore! An American coffee machine can make a proper Americano, but! This doesn't mean that Americanos made with espresso machines aren't authentic Americanos, because Americano coffee has now become a type of coffee beverage, so you can also make a proper Americano with an espresso machine!
PS: In fact, the coffee beans required for brewing espresso and Americano are also different. Espresso requires coffee beans with a finer grind and darker roast to produce aromatic and rich coffee when pressed under pressure, so commercial blends or espresso blends are often better choices. Americano coffee uses American drip machines, which extract coffee by dripping hot water through the grounds, better highlighting the original flavors and aromas of the coffee beans. The grind is also coarser than that required for espresso. At this time, we can choose some single-origin specialty coffee beans to better experience different regional characteristics!
