Baoshan Yunnan Arabica Coffee

Baoshan was the first area in Yunnan Province to develop commercial cultivation of Arabica coffee. Lujiangba in Longyang District in particular, with its distinctive climate, soil conditions, and mature, advanced cultivation techniques, produces a Baoshan Arabica that is known at home and abroad for its unique quality. In recent years coffee has become the region's most important high-value tropical cash crop, and Baoshan's coffee growing area ranks second in the province. By 2011 the area had reached 223,700 mu, involving more than 50 enterprises and over 18,800 households, playing a positive role in raising local farmers' income and alleviating rural poverty.

Baoshan Yunnan Arabica Coffee, a specialty of Lujiang in Baoshan, Yunnan, is a national geographical indication product and one of the finest coffees in China and even globally. The beans are uniform and full, with a fresh and rich aroma and a mellow taste. It carries richness without harshness, comparable to the world-renowned Blue Mountain coffee. Its reputation rests on that distinctive quality: in the late 1950s it was rated first-class on the London market and earned the name "Lujiang No. 1." At the 1980 National Coffee Conference it was recognized as "the crown of national coffee." In 1987, a technical president from the Swiss Nestlé Coffee Company who came to inspect Lujiang, after drinking Lujiang Arabica coffee, remarked: "This is the best coffee I've had in China." In December 2010, after review by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, national geographical indication product protection was granted for "Baoshan Arabica Coffee."

The Lujiangba area of Baoshan has a dry-hot valley climate rare in Yunnan and indeed in the whole country, which suits Arabica coffee well. Lujiangba in Longyang District sits at the eastern foot of Gaoligongshan Mountain, along both banks of the Nujiang River, between longitude 98°44'-99°05'E and latitude 24°46'-25°33'N, with elevations ranging from 640 to 3510 meters. Most Arabica plots sit at 800-1200 meters, with a small portion already cultivated at around 1400 meters. The growing base has a subtropical monsoon climate, with an average annual temperature of 21.3°C, 2334.5 hours of sunshine a year, annual rainfall of 721.51-100 mm, an active accumulated temperature of 7800°C at or above 10°C, and essentially no frost all year. The Lujiang growing area has a long history and deep experience, with more than 50 years of planting behind it, and yields about 150-200 kg per mu. It is one of the world's celebrated premium Arabica coffee regions.

FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation

For a gentle introduction to Yunnan coffee, FrontStreet Yunnan Small Bean is the natural starting point. Grown in Baoshan and processed by the washed method, then given a medium roast, it delivers soft nut and chocolate sweetness with a light plum acidity, and it remains one of the most affordable ways to taste what the region can do. The washed process removes the mucilage through fermentation and rinsing before drying, which is what lets the cup show the terroir of Yunnan so clearly.

If you want a more vivid expression of the region, FrontStreet's 2013 Sun-Dried Typica is the step up. FrontStreet planted its own estate in 2013 with Typica, the oldest and purest of the Arabica varieties and the one the French missionary brought to Yunnan in 1904. The cherries are picked fully ripe, dried in the sun, and given a medium roast that balances the cup and sharpens its acidity. Expect dark berry, caramel sweetness, chocolate and a hint of dried apricot, with a red tea finish and a creamy aftertaste. FrontStreet's two Yunnan specialty coffees come from Baoshan and Lincang.

For an espresso with Yunnan character, the FrontStreet Black Cocoa Blend pairs Yunnan Small Bean with Brazil Cerrado. Brazil supplies mixed-nut aroma and a balanced body, while the Yunnan component brings chocolate and citrus. Pulled as an Americano it is balanced across acidity, sweetness and bitterness, with nut and brown sugar sweetness; with milk it turns smooth and creamy, with almond notes. It is a friendly choice for beginners.
