For café owners, using blended coffee beans (also known as formula beans) can mask the shortcomings of individual coffee beans and present flavors that most people enjoy. From a business perspective, formula beans are products that mix different prices to adjust selling prices. Additionally, as a "signature coffee," a balanced flavor is essential, allowing customers to taste the same flavor whenever they visit. When it's not guaranteed to purchase the same coffee beans each time, it's also important to continuously reproduce the same aroma through blending coffee beans.
The First Step in Blending Coffee Beans Starts with Mixing Roasted Beans
Shop owners must consider many limitations when mixing formula beans, but when making it at home, it's simply a pleasant process of pursuing and creating flavors you like. Now let's look at the actual steps for blending coffee!
The most basic method is to mix roasted beans and then grind and brew. If you mix green beans first and start roasting, since you need to simultaneously roast green beans of different particle sizes and moisture contents, uneven roasting can easily occur. As for large enterprises or factories that need to produce large quantities of blended coffee, since batch roasting by green bean type is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and costly, they sometimes adopt the method of mixing green beans first and then roasting. However, this can only be achieved with large equipment and many other conditions, and generally isn't handled this way.
When mixing green beans, quantities are usually calculated by "volume" rather than weight. When making at home, you can use measuring spoons as a benchmark. If you want a 1:1 ratio, use 1 spoon each of 2 types of green beans; if you want a 2:3 ratio, use 2 spoons of one type and 3 spoons of another. Note that the smaller the quantity of green beans, the greater the deviation in the finished product of the same formula. Considering subsequent adjustments or reproducibility, you need a certain quantity when mixing green beans. Even during the ratio testing phase, you should blend enough green beans to brew several cups of coffee.
