Coffee Growing Regions and Varieties
Coffee is suitable for cultivation mainly in subtropical and tropical regions, within a circular area centered on the equator, between 25 degrees north and south latitude. Coffee growth is mainly distributed in five regions, and coffee beans from different regions have different flavor and taste characteristics. Coffee grown in different regions has distinct regional characteristics.
Coffee belongs to the evergreen shrubs of the genus Coffea in the Rubiaceae family. There are approximately 125 species of plants under the Coffea genus, distributed in subgenus Coffeae (25 in Africa and 55 in Madagascar, Mascarene and Comoros archipelago groups) and 7 species in subgenus Baracoffeae.
Commercially Valuable Coffee Varieties
Among these, only three species have commercial value:
• Arabica (Coffea Arabica), Robusta (Coffea canephora, also known as Coffea Robusta), and Liberica (Coffea Liberica). These three varieties are called the "three major native coffee species."
• Arabica accounts for about 70% of total world production, with specialty coffee being in high demand;
• Robusta accounts for 27%, mainly used for instant and canned coffee, with caffeine content twice that of Arabica;
• Liberica, due to its susceptibility to leaf rust disease and poor flavor, is only traded domestically in West African countries such as Suriname, Liberia, and Côte d'Ivoire, and is not popular worldwide.
Arabica
Growing Conditions: Altitude 800-2000 meters
Characteristics: Higher price (due to higher cultivation difficulty), smooth flavor, more prominent sweetness, lower caffeine content
Typica
The tree height is 3-4 meters, with a conical shape, and the angle between the trunk and branches is about 50-70 degrees. The leaves are narrow and bronze-colored. The berries are more elliptical than other varieties. Typica has undergone genetic evolution, with many variant varieties better adapted to the surrounding environment, producing new characteristics, usually considered new varieties. For example, Mexican Typica and Hawaiian Typica are slightly different, thus having different names: Criollo (South America), Arabigo (Americas), Kona (Hawaii), Pluma Hidalgo (Mexico), Garundang (Sumatra), Blue Mountain (Jamaica, Papua New Guinea), São Bernado & San Ramón (Brazil), Kent and Chickumalgu (India).
Although the most common coffee variety in Yunnan is Catimor, which has Robusta bloodline, this is not absolute. With the development of specialty coffee, the concept of specialty coffee has gradually become known. Furthermore, the coffee variety originally cultivated in Yunnan was Typica, which is why Yunnan coffee is called small bean coffee! FrontStreet Coffee's "Yunnan Huaguoshan" bean is a Typica variety.
