Thai Iced Coffee: Oliang

Thailand has a unique Thai iced coffee, which Thais call Oliang or Oleang, featuring the distinctive strong flavors characteristic of Thai cuisine. Oliang tastes sweet and is brewed with various ingredients such as condensed milk, unsweetened condensed milk, soy milk, corn, sesame seeds, or other materials according to personal preference! Traditional Thai coffee is made with concentrated or diluted milk, while we use coconut cream instead of dairy-free alternatives. A hint of cardamom and almond extract elevates this beverage's creamer component to another level. Then, espresso is brewed over the creamer and ice to complete this delicious drink.

Chiang Mai: Thailand's Coffee Paradise

Located in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai has recently become one of the popular tourist destinations. Besides the historically rich Buddhist temples and scenic landscapes that travelers love, there are also products representing the local leisurely lifestyle culture - coffee. As Thailand's second-largest city has continuously expanded its coffee industry in recent years, striving to develop from production, roasting to trade and retail aspects, this has deepened the relationship between coffee and Chiang Mai, making it a local cultural特色 to be proud of.

Arabica Coffee Production

The main coffee bean produced in Thailand is Arabica. Chiang Mai, located in northern Thailand, is one of the few cities with relatively cool climates, where at least one or two months a year are free from scorching heat, so both hot coffee and iced coffee have their own market support locally.

Royal Project and Coffee Industry Development

The successful development of Thailand's coffee bean market is attributed to the Thai Royal Project launched by the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 1969, which included the "Northern Thailand Mountain Agricultural Development Plan." This encouraged local people to invest in sustainable industries, aiming to replace poppies with high-economic crops, reducing "slash and burn" agricultural practices related to opium production, thereby alleviating poverty and combating drugs while creating an environmental economy. As a forest crop, coffee production and exports have fluctuated since 1970. According to statistics from the International Coffee Organization (ICO) for the 2015-16 year, Thailand exported 500,000 bags of coffee in that year, however, domestic consumption alone reached 1.2 million bags. It's clear that under strong demand, Chiang Mai is inevitably affected to some extent.

Modern Coffee Culture in Chiang Mai

Nowadays, strolling along Nimman Avenue in Chiang Mai, it's not as easy to encounter locals selling coffee as before. Instead, you'll find various glass-walled coffee shops offering free wifi, or mobile coffee trucks parked by the roadside. The city has many exquisite specialty shops where coffee enthusiasts can enjoy themselves.
