The history of Laos' coffee bean industry can be traced back to the French colonial era a century ago. At that time, the French discovered that the Bolaven Plateau, situated at high altitude with mineral-rich soil, provided an excellent growing environment for coffee beans. The Sisombat family relocated to France during the civil war. It wasn't until recent years, when the Lao government gradually opened up to private enterprises, that he and his father, who had previously served as Minister of Commerce, decided to return to their homeland in 1992 and chose to develop coffee beans into a family business.
Sinouk Sisombat purchased land on the Bolaven Plateau to grow coffee beans and sent the first batch of harvest samples to a coffee research institution in Montpellier, southern France, for quality assessment. The results received high praise, and from then on, Sinouk determined to enter the premium coffee market.
Arabica Coffee Beans: Challenging to Cultivate
Today, coffee beans have become Laos' most important agricultural export, but the challenging-to-cultivate Arabica coffee beans only account for one-third of total production.
Laos' annual coffee bean export value is around tens of millions of dollars, still far from Vietnam's billions of dollars. Therefore, coffee farmers on the Bolaven Plateau strive for "quality over quantity."
