Coffee Blends
Coffee blends are created by combining several single-origin coffee beans, roasted according to the characteristics of each producing region and blended in specific proportions to create espresso coffee beans. The goal is to achieve a more rounded and harmonious flavor with rich, layered taste profiles.
In Europe, Espresso is part of daily life. People start their morning with a Latte, then enjoy visiting cafés to buy an Espresso. Most customers wait at the bar counter to get their fresh coffee first-hand, finishing it in three small sips. The bar staff and customers know each other and chat, making the coffee shop a social venue.
On the West Coast of America and in Taiwan, Italian coffee shops line the streets as popular spots for young people's dates and business meetings. However, they mostly don't drink pure Espresso, preferring milk-based beverages like Cappuccino or Latte. This is because Espresso is small in volume, very concentrated, and doesn't satisfy their personal preferences.
Espresso is a blend of coffee beans from various origins because the high-pressure hot water extraction process requires it. Single-origin beans tend to lack distinctive complexity under this extraction method. Therefore, the Italian-style coffee beans available on the market vary from brand to brand, each with its own unique characteristics.
There are generally two roasting methods for espresso coffee beans: light roast and dark roast. Light roast is suitable for any hot coffee preparation but less suitable for iced coffee because it has stronger acidity, which Chinese consumers generally dislike.
Dark roast is suitable for both hot and iced coffee consumption, delivering a smooth taste without excessive acidity regardless of temperature. This is because coffee beans contain lipids, and the emulsified lipids are the main source of mellow flavor. Therefore, Espresso often uses darker roasting to drive lipids to the cell pores' exits without causing them to overflow significantly onto the bean surface. Due to Espresso's rich flavor, it doesn't get diluted when mixed with fresh milk or other beverages, making it incredibly versatile. It can be made into various coffee styles, for example:
★ Espresso plus fresh milk plus milk foam – Cappuccino
★ Fresh milk plus Espresso plus a small amount of milk foam – Latte
★ Espresso plus fresh milk, chocolate syrup, and whipped cream – Italian Mocha
★ Espresso plus milk foam – Macchiato
★ Espresso plus whipped cream – Con Panna
