What is the Principle of French Press? What Are the Special Requirements for French Press Coffee Beans?

French press coffee making involves fully steeping coffee grounds in the pot, then using a plunger with a metal filter to separate the coffee from the grounds. This brewing method produces coffee with excellent body, enhancing texture and oils, while the final coffee remains remarkably clean.

How to Make Coffee with a French Press?

1. Grind Size

French press coffee can easily over-extract, so the grind size should be coarser. Generally, it should be slightly larger than granulated sugar particles. If the grind is too fine, extraction will be very rapid, and small coffee particles will pass through the metal filter, making the coffee taste less clean.

2. Coffee Brewing Ratio

The coffee brewing ratio refers to the proportion of coffee to water. Common brewing ratios range from 1:15 to 1:18. A 1:15 ratio means using 225g of water for 15g of coffee. If you're using a French press at home, you can adjust the brewing ratio according to your taste preference.

3. Water Temperature

Use hot water at approximately 92-94°C for brewing.

Steps:

Required Equipment: French press coffee beans, French press, coffee spoon, grinder, timer, cup

Preparation (serving 1-2 people, using 20g coffee beans, 300ml water):

  1. Boil water. Grind beans while water heats.
  2. Grind the coffee beans.
  3. Preheat the French press with hot water. Pour out the water.
  4. Add coffee grounds to the French press.
  5. Pour hot water (approximately 92-93°C) into the French press to the marked capacity line. Start timing.
  6. Place the lid on the French press with the filter stopped at the highest position. Wait for 2.5-3 minutes.
  7. When time is up, press the filter to the bottom.
  8. Pour all the coffee into cups.
  9. Enjoy a cup of good coffee.
