What Is Cold Drip Coffee?

Cold drip coffee, also called water-drip coffee or ice-brewed coffee, is a way of making coffee with ice water, cold water, or ice cubes. The extraction is extremely slow and often takes several hours, which is why cold drip coffee tends to be relatively expensive.

Legend has it that cold drip was invented in the Netherlands. A typical cold drip tower consists of 3-4 stacked glass vessels mounted on a wooden base. For cold drip, dark-roasted beans work best. A slow drip rate of about 7 drops every 10 seconds, sustained for eight to ten hours, lets the coffee grounds become fully saturated and evenly wetted, which effectively strips away bitterness and tannins. The finished coffee is a clear amber color with a rich, smooth body that is neither acidic nor harsh on the stomach.

How to Use:

  1. First, close the water-drop adjustment valve.
  2. Add the appropriate amount of cold drinking water to the water container according to how many people you are serving, and add ice cubes if you want iced coffee. One pot holds about 800 ml.
  3. Place a special filter cloth or a round filter paper in the coffee powder cup, moisten it with water, then seat it in the cup.
  4. Put the appropriate amount of extra-fine ground coffee into the coffee powder cup.
  5. Finally, place the round filter paper on the central surface of the coffee powder (use No. 6 round filter paper made for water-drip coffee makers). The paper should sit exactly at the point where drops fall from the water container.
  6. Slowly open the water-drop adjustment valve so that water begins to drip from the water container. The drops should land on the round filter paper. The standard drip rate is about 7 drops every 10 seconds, and the valve should be readjusted every 2 hours.
  7. The drops soak through the round filter paper and the coffee powder, become coffee as they pass through the cloth filter, and finally fall into the coffee liquid container. Delicious, cold, 100% original-flavor water-drip coffee is now ready.

Important Notes:

  1. Before and after use, be sure to rinse all glass parts and the cloth filter with clean water.
  2. After use, discard the round filter paper immediately. Do not reuse it.
  3. The filter cloth on the cloth filter can be reused after cleaning. If you notice that the cloth is damaged or gives off an unpleasant odor before use, stop using it at once and replace it with new filter cloth.

Recommended Cold Drip Coffee Bean Brands

FrontStreet Coffee roasts single-origin beans that are especially well suited to cold drip, and both the brand and the quality are fully dependable. For a deep, dark-berry character, FrontStreet Costa Rica Mozart is a standout: Costa Rica is famous for honey-processed coffee, and Mozart is anaerobically honey-processed, carrying a distinctive raisin aroma. Cold-dripped, it shows clear blueberry, black grape, and wine-like fermented notes, with a crisp body and a long finish.

If you prefer something cleaner and brighter, FrontStreet Kenya Cherry Tomato is a classic Kenyan specialty bean given a 72-hour washed process, with 48 extra hours of rinsing and soaking, so its acidity is lively and juice-like. For a sweeter, more mellow cup, FrontStreet PWN Golden Mandheling, a quintessential medium-dark roast, brings out black chocolate, cocoa, and toasted-bread aromas; cold-dripped and rested in the refrigerator for 24 hours over ice, it turns sweet and transparent with a gentle chocolate bittersweetness. And for a red-tea finish, FrontStreet Ethiopia Huakui, grown above 2,200 meters in Guji Hambella and natural-processed, delivers cream strawberry, guava, dried mango, and floral notes layered over a lingering black-tea sweetness.

FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation

Cold drip rewards beans with clear, concentrated fruit character, and FrontStreet Coffee's single-origin lineup is built for exactly that. Start with FrontStreet Costa Rica Mozart for its blueberry, black grape, and raisin depth, or FrontStreet Kenya Cherry Tomato for a crisp cherry-tomato and grapefruit brightness that is especially refreshing in summer.

For a darker, more comforting cold drip, FrontStreet PWN Golden Mandheling delivers black chocolate, cocoa, and toasted-bread sweetness, while FrontStreet Ethiopia Huakui layers cream strawberry, guava, dried mango, and black tea for a delicate, floral cup.
