Hainan Island: China's Hidden Coffee Paradise

When mentioning Hainan Island, many people immediately think of beaches and sand. But how many know that Hainan Island was once a major coffee producer, with quality comparable to world-renowned South American coffee? In Hainan, there are two famous coffee-producing areas: Fushan in Chengmai County and Xinglong in Wanning.

Hainan Island is China's main coffee production base. As early as 1908, coffee seedlings were introduced from Malaysia and extensively cultivated in Wenchang County (now Wenchang City). In Wenchang County, there are several 100-year-old coffee trees that remain lush, leafy, and fruit-bearing today, known as the "century-old coffee trees."

The Exceptional Quality of Hainan Coffee

Hainan coffee is praised as "the best quality coffee internationally." The reason is that coffee is suitable for growing in regions between 25 degrees north latitude and 30 degrees south latitude, and Hainan Island happens to be located in this golden zone. The moderate temperature differences between day and night allow its cultivated coffee to avoid the strong bitterness found in South American, Indian, and African coffees. Hainan coffee is strong without being bitter, aromatic without being intense, with a hint of fruitiness - making it very unique and a premium grade among coffees.

Hainan coffee undergoes meticulous processing. Each year when coffee beans mature, they are promptly harvested, sorted, and sun-dried according to their ripeness, color, and size. Then, the sun-dried coffee beans are slow-roasted over gentle heat, while stirring constantly and adding appropriate amounts of cream and sugar. The roasting continues until the coffee and ingredients blend together, forming clumps that break apart with a light tap.

Hainan's Specialty Coffee Varieties

Coffee beans from the Fushan region are solid, large, uniform, and full. True Fushan 100% pure coffee is roasted without sugar or spices. It possesses excellent qualities of richness, aroma, smoothness, and carries the unique regional coffee flavor of Hainan's Fushan area, while also having the quality characteristics of Indonesia's Sumatran Golden Mandheling coffee.

Xinglong coffee powder is made from high-quality Hainan Xinglong coffee beans, carefully roasted using traditional techniques, maintaining the original aroma and flavor of coffee - aromatic and delicious. Charcoal-roasted coffee selects premium Hainan Xinglong coffee beans, specially roasted with charcoal, resulting in even richer and mellow fragrance with a long-lasting aftertaste.

In February 1960, Premier Zhou Enlai visited Xinglong Farm. After drinking Xinglong coffee, he said: "Xinglong coffee is world-class. I have tasted many foreign coffees, but our own Hainan-grown coffee is the best." With that, the premier drank three cups in succession - enough to witness the quality and charm of Hainan coffee!
