Hainan Coffee: Beyond Tourism

Besides tourism, does Hainan Island have any special local products? Actually, there's something called Hainan coffee, which was brought back by overseas Chinese who lived in Southeast Asia in earlier times. Due to the climate and environment, this area specializes in growing "medium-fruit coffee," also known as the Robusta variety. With its strong and bitter taste, it has become a locally promising economic industry.

The History and Culture of Hainan Coffee

The cultivation history of Hainan coffee can be summarized in four words: "saving the nation through industry." Everyone can learn about Mr. Chen Xianzhang's story through Baidu, so I won't elaborate here—let's focus on coffee culture. Hainan coffee is not small-bean coffee—Arabica species coffee—but medium-bean coffee—Canephora species coffee, also known as Robusta. Regular coffee drinkers know that Robusta coffee is both bitter and astringent, hard to swallow, but people in Southeast Asia love to drink it. They stir-fry coffee beans in iron woks and add butter, white sugar, salt, condensed milk, and so on. By this point, some people probably already know what I'm talking about—yes, the most typical example is Malaysian white coffee. I'm not talking about instant coffee, so don't pretend to understand if you don't. Friends who have been to Southeast Asia have probably drunk that thick, syrupy, and sickeningly sweet coffee. Friends who haven't been to Southeast Asia can watch "First Love Ice Red Beans" filmed by A Niu. I'm getting off topic—back to Hainan coffee. Hainan is more suitable for growing medium-bean coffee than Southeast Asia, so at that time, most Hainan coffee was exported to Southeast Asia. In places like Xinglong and Fushan in Hainan, where coffee was widely cultivated in those days, the area of coffee plantations is decreasing year by year, but the remaining ones all use Southeast Asian methods to roast coffee beans. Instant coffee is not within my scope of discussion. When traveling to Hainan, many cafes only sell Hainan Xinglong coffee—some people say it's not good, but that's because this type of coffee is very unique and rarely drank by people from mainland China, which can be considered a form of coffee culture.

Coffee Varieties Around the World

Coffee worldwide can be roughly divided into three major native species: Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica. Generally speaking, Arabica is the premium coffee bean, only cultivated in high-altitude areas. Liberica prefers high temperatures and humidity and has a lighter taste. The Xinglong area has an altitude of 21 to 532 meters and an average annual temperature of 24.5 degrees, which is just right for Robusta, but due to its bitter taste, it's generally used to blend with Arabica or for making instant coffee.

Charcoal-Roasted Coffee Varieties

Official Advertisement: There are many types of charcoal-roasted coffee, mainly two types of coffee both made with artificial charcoal fire roasting processes, but with different raw materials. Charcoal-roasted coffee uses Xinglong coffee; Xinglong charcoal-roasted coffee combines the advantages of charcoal-roasted coffee and mountain coffee, with a fragrant, mellow, and smooth taste that retains the rich aroma of coffee while bringing a hint of charcoal fire's burnt fragrance. The taste is pure, intense, and mellow.

Coffee Pricing in Hainan

In Xinglong, farmers' general coffee sells for only ten to twenty yuan per jin (500g).

In tourist area Xinglong coffee factories, "Xinglong premium coffee beans" sell for as high as 108 yuan per jin (500g).

However, most Hainan coffee is sold as instant coffee!
