Hainan coffee is rich without being bitter, fragrant without being strong, and carries a unique fruity flavor.

Nationally, 95% of coffee is produced in Yunnan, while Hainan's coffee production accounts for less than 2% of the country's total. However, many people only know about Chinese Hainan coffee and are unaware of Yunnan coffee. Why is this?

In Hainan, coffee is not just a beverage, nor is it exclusive to the "petty bourgeoisie" group. More often, it is a popular form of cultural leisure, carrying strong local sentiment and rich cultural heritage.

Xinglong: The Earliest Local Coffee Brand

Speaking of Xinglong coffee, one cannot ignore the Xinglong Overseas Chinese Farm. Established in 1951, this farm is China's earliest and largest overseas Chinese farm. It successively resettled tens of thousands of returned overseas Chinese from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and other regions.

In the 1950s, returned overseas Chinese from Southeast Asia not only brought the tradition of drinking coffee and the skills of making and brewing coffee to Xinglong but also successfully introduced what would later become famous Xinglong coffee.

In 1960, Premier Zhou Enlai, who visited Xinglong Farm, tasted the locally produced coffee and said: "Xinglong coffee is world-class. I have had many foreign coffees, but our own grown coffee is the best."

The roasting technique for Xinglong coffee adopts Southeast Asian methods. This local Xinglong coffee is most suitable for such roasting. During the roasting process, one must not only control the heat but also timely add white sugar, salt, and butter, making the coffee exceptionally fragrant and rich.

Now, in the small town of Xinglong, there are more than 30 coffee shops of various sizes.

Fushan: Making Hainan Coffee Internationally Famous

Fushan is also one of the earlier regions in Hainan to cultivate coffee.

As early as 1935, Chen Xianzhang, a returned overseas Chinese from Indonesia, successfully introduced coffee to Fushan and established the Fumin Farm for this purpose, with products exported to Southeast Asia.

In 1957, Zhu De and Liu Bocheng successively visited Fushan to inspect the coffee plantations and praised them endlessly after tasting. From then on, Fushan coffee began to gain national fame.

During the "Cultural Revolution," Fushan coffee plantations were completely destroyed for various reasons.

It wasn't until 1976 that Xu Xiuyi, a Fushan farmer under 40, decided to revive Fushan coffee's glory. He established a collective enterprise, expanded the plantation base, and jointly built a processing plant with the county.

In Fushan, he established the first enterprise for coffee cultivation, processing, and trade.

In recent years, Chengmai has attached great importance to the development of the coffee industry and the promotion of coffee culture. Not only has it enhanced the taste and quality of Fushan's specialty coffee, but it has also gradually made the Fushan coffee brand internationally renowned.
