The Rise of Gesha Village Coffee Estate

In recent years, the increasingly popular Gesha Village Coffee Estate has also started its own auction activities. So what makes this coffee estate, which claims to come from the homeland of Geisha, so outstanding that it attracts many green bean merchants to compete?

The Discovery of Gesha Forest

Located in the border region between Ethiopia and Kenya, there is a Gesha Forest where the Geisha variety was discovered in 1931. It was later cultivated and spread to Panamanian estates. Since 2004, this Geisha variety has been invincible in major coffee bean competitions, with its elegant and unique flavor making it unforgettable. This variety is known as 1931 Geisha, commonly called Panamanian Geisha.

A Dream Born from Documentary

While the coffee world was swept by this trend, American documentary director Adam Overton and his Ethiopian photographer wife Rachel Samuel were commissioned in 2007 to shoot a documentary about coffee in Ethiopia. As filming progressed, they had deep contact with the Ethiopian land and its people, falling deeply in love with coffee and this land. The dream of establishing their own estate gradually began to sprout.

Establishing Gesha Village Coffee Estate

Adam and Rachel searched for suitable estate land for three years, looking further and further away from the city and into forest areas. Under local guidance, they went to the forest homeland of Geisha. This area is located in Bench Maji, a two-day drive from the capital Addis Ababa. Despite the long journey, when the two first saw the stunning beauty of this place, their fatigue turned to joy, and they decided to establish their own estate here - naming it Gesha Village Coffee Estate.

Discovering the Original Geisha

At that time, the two met Willem Boot, the estate owner who had just bought La Mula in 2009 to cultivate Geisha, and then went to Panama to learn from him about growing Geisha. When Willem visited the newly groundbreaking Gesha Village Estate in 2011, Adam and Willem searched for suitable varieties to plant together. In the nearby Gori Gesha Forest, they were pleasantly surprised to find a variety quite similar in form to 1931 Geisha, with a rich and enchanting jasmine fragrance filling the forest. Estate owner Adam couldn't help but boldly speculate that the Geisha here was the original parent variety of the 1931 Geisha. Later, Willem Boot also invited American botany experts to compare this variety with Panamanian Geisha genetically, finding that these two Geisha varieties were not only similar in form but also very close genetically.

Sustainable Estate Management

Currently, the estate has 475 hectares of coffee plantation land, with a planting density maintained at 2000 coffee trees per hectare. In the first three years of establishing the estate, thirty thousand shade trees were planted to maintain the sun exposure ratio of coffee trees and the ecological diversity of this area. Due to maintaining the local ecological environment and establishing good cooperative relationships with local residents, they also established the Gesha Village Foundation to give back to the local community and promote educational development through two schools near the estate. These efforts have made the residents of this area very friendly and supportive of the estate.

Auction System and Featured Coffee

After more than five years of effort, Gesha Village Coffee Estate established its own auction system three years ago. This batch selected for you is the return to homeland of 1931 Geisha, grown in the Surma region of Bench Maji. With its delicate floral notes, elegant tropical fruit flavors, and fine honey-like sweetness, this is the wonderful taste that FrontStreet Coffee and Gesha Village Estate want to share with you!

Auction Batch Selection Process

Batches of coffee beans will be sent to laboratories in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Willem Boot's laboratory in California, USA, for initial selection.

All cupping sessions are conducted according to the standard procedures of the Specialty Coffee Association. All coffee beans entering the auction competition undergo at least six consecutive elimination selection processes before being selected as auction batch coffee beans.

Gesha Village Coffee Bean Brand Recommendation

FrontStreet Coffee roasted Gesha Village coffee beans - Gesha Village Natural Geisha Coffee - have full guarantees in both brand and quality. More importantly, the cost-performance ratio is extremely high. A half-pound 100-gram bag costs only 150 yuan. Calculating at 15 grams of powder per cup of single-origin coffee, one bag can make 6 cups of coffee, with each cup costing only about 25 yuan. Compared to cafés selling single cups for hundreds of yuan, this is an excellent value proposition.
