Drinking coffee containing Robusta coffee beans in moderation daily can help with weight loss. However, while drinking coffee, you should also maintain a balanced diet and moderate exercise. Relying solely on coffee cannot directly lead to weight loss.
What is Robusta Coffee?
Robusta coffee beans (Robusta) are one of the two most common major varieties, alongside Arabica (Arabica).
Robusta coffee is a natural variety from West Africa that can be grown in lower altitudes and higher temperature regions. It also has extremely strong adaptability, able to resist harsh climates and pest infestations. It doesn't require much manual care during land preparation, weeding, and pruning, allowing it to grow in the wild, making it an easy-to-cultivate coffee tree.
Although Robusta has low cultivation costs and high yield rates, its flavor is more bitter and astringent than Arabica varieties, and its quality is inferior. Therefore, it is mostly used to make instant coffee and is sold at very low prices.
Price Doesn't Equal Quality
Because of its low price, Robusta is often mixed into commercial coffee powders to reduce costs. Currently, most cheap instant coffee on the market is predominantly Robusta. However, price doesn't equal quality - high-quality Robusta beans are often used for espressos because they produce richer crema (crema). High-quality Robusta can even taste better than low-quality Arabica beans.
Therefore, the choice between the two coffee beans mainly depends on personal preference. Some people might find Arabica's aroma too strong, while others prefer Robusta's rich bitterness. The only thing we need to remind you is that if you are sensitive to caffeine, you should pay special attention to caffeine content, as Robusta's caffeine content is twice that of Arabica.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Robusta
The advantages of Robusta are: low acidity and high caffeine content; the disadvantages are its harsh, bitter taste and poor flavor. It's not suitable for drinking coffee extracted directly from Robusta coffee beans - it needs sugar/milk to adjust the bitterness.
However, influenced by the specialty Arabica coffee wave, the cultivation and processing of Robusta coffee have also received attention! High-quality Robusta can retain its characteristics of high body and low acidity while showcasing pleasant flavors like barley tea, nuts, and caramel.
Can Robusta Only Be Used for Making Instant Coffee?
Not at all! When appropriately blended with Arabica, it can enhance the coffee's richness while not making Robusta's bitter flavor too prominent. For example, in the 2022 World Barista Championship, Japanese competitor Toshiyuki Ishigami used a blend of Panama Hartman Geisha with Vietnamese specialty Robusta, subverting the new generation of coffee enthusiasts' definition of specialty coffee.
Although Robusta's flavor is not as good as Arabica coffee beans, it has very strong body and can bring a very solid, rich texture to coffee. If brewed directly, it might not taste good, but when used in blends, Robusta can be said to be an excellent "partner."
Currently, FrontStreet Coffee sells an "Commercial Blend" in its espresso blend coffee beans, consisting of 60% Brazilian Arabica beans + 30% Colombian Arabica beans + 10% Vietnamese Robusta beans. The mixed nut flavors from Brazilian coffee beans provide the main tone, the berry and caramel flavors from Colombian coffee beans enrich the coffee's layers, while the small addition of Vietnamese Robusta enhances the coffee's body.
