Pour-Over Coffee — A Filter Coffee Method

Are you someone who needs to start their beautiful day with a cup of coffee? Many people must drink a cup of coffee in the morning before they can begin work. Some choose to buy freshly brewed coffee from convenience stores or coffee shops, while others simply make a cup of instant coffee. However, starting now, filter coffee becomes your brand new choice.

The Importance of Grinding Beans: Freshness from Grinding

First, let's talk about surface area, which is a significant influencing factor. Since the surface area of ground coffee is much larger than that of whole beans, grinding beans into powder is a crucial step during brewing extraction. Different grinders can handle different fineness levels, and generally, finer grinders are more expensive. However, for regular pour-over coffee fineness, a grinder around three thousand yuan can handle the job well. Making espresso requires extremely fine particles.

So, is this packaging method suitable for filter coffee? The answer depends on the processing method and time. After grinding, the longer the coffee is exposed to air, the more easily aromatic molecules are lost, which is what we call insufficient freshness. The way to determine coffee bean freshness in pour-over coffee is to see if fresh carbon dioxide bubbles appear during blooming. This principle applies equally to filter coffee. Therefore, when purchasing, pay attention to the roasting and grinding dates from the shop. Coffee powder that has been left for too long will result in insufficient extraction and brew an unpleasant cup of coffee.

Therefore, some people also recommend purchasing a grinder and 'drip bags' to make filter coffee yourself. When buying, select coffee beans and start grinding them right before brewing, then place them in the drip bag for brewing. You can still enjoy the taste of pour-over coffee.

How to Make Filter Coffee

Self-made filter coffee is usually better than filter coffee found directly in stores. Buy the same coffee beans or coffee powder, purchase PP polyethylene material filter coffee drip bags online, and when ready to brew, measure the right amount of coffee powder and add it to the drip bag. Adding enough coffee powder prevents the coffee from flowing too quickly, causing insufficient extraction, and the resulting coffee will taste like something is missing.

You can also ask the shop to help make drip bags when buying coffee beans. At FrontStreet Coffee, you can make drip bags by selecting your own beans, allowing you to drink coffee made from your favorite beans.

Open the filter coffee package, which contains about 10 grams of coffee powder. If adding powder yourself, use approximately 10 grams. Place it securely on both sides of the cup to prevent falling. Add 90-95°C hot water for 20-30 seconds of blooming. Blooming will make the coffee powder seem to awaken.

Continue adding hot water from the center point to brew about 150ml of coffee, and you can enjoy a delicious cup of coffee.

The water-to-powder ratio is approximately 1:15.

Because filter coffee combines the advantages of both instant coffee and pour-over coffee, this has led to the rapid growth of drip bags in the East Asian market. In 2011, global filter coffee sales reached 1.4 billion bags, approximately 11,200 metric tons, with 94% of sales coming from Japan. Starbucks Japan also specifically launched filter coffee for this market. Although current global filter coffee sales are not large and the market size is relatively small, the growth rate is very rapid.

There are many ways to drink coffee, each presenting different flavors, and this is the beauty of coffee. Are you already someone who feels something is missing every day without coffee? If you find it troublesome, you can make good use of the convenience of filter coffee. If the office pantry can't accommodate a grinder, use one filter coffee bag to solve the problem; when traveling and uncertain about local coffee quality, bring filter coffee to solve it. As long as you have hot water, you can brew coffee. While it seems like a coffee entry-level product, it also offers many conveniences.

FrontStreet Coffee's Filter Coffee Brewing Recommendations:

Choose a shallow coffee cup that allows the filter coffee to soak in the cup. Use 90°C water for brewing, with a powder-to-water ratio of 1:15, and a time of about 1 minute and 30 seconds.
